{"id":1596,"date":"2012-07-03T11:46:44","date_gmt":"2012-07-03T17:46:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/waltoncountyheritage.org\/wp\/?p=1596"},"modified":"2012-07-03T11:46:44","modified_gmt":"2012-07-03T17:46:44","slug":"the-defuniak-herald-march-1918-obituaries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/waltonpast2present.com\/wcgs\/2012\/07\/the-defuniak-herald-march-1918-obituaries\/","title":{"rendered":"The DeFuniak Herald &#8211; March 1918 &#8211; Obituaries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>1918 Mar 7&#8211; <strong>Willie<\/strong> <strong>Miller<\/strong> dies in France last Friday of pneumonia.\u00a0 He lived in Pt Washington but his<\/p>\n<p>family had moved to another part of the county or state.\u00a0 The telegram announcing his death<\/p>\n<p>has so far been undelivered and still remains at the Western Union office.\u00a0 Anyone knowing<\/p>\n<p>where some of his people are this paper would be glad to get a little history of this man who<\/p>\n<p>was among the first to give his life for his country.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1918 Mar 14 &#8212; <strong>Lee<\/strong> <strong>Muterspaugh<\/strong>, a former Walton county boy, died in New York according to a telegram<\/p>\n<p>received this morning from the commandant of the Brooklyn yard and the commander of the<\/p>\n<p>vessel on which he was serving. Cause of death not stated.\u00a0 The deceased enlisted in the Navy<\/p>\n<p>last December and at time of death had a rating of first class fireman.\u00a0 He was about 24 yrs<\/p>\n<p>of age and survived by mother, 3 brothers and one sister. (second obit) says he died of<\/p>\n<p>natural causes and body was shipped to Freeport for burial on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mrs <strong>Sarah<\/strong> <strong>Laird<\/strong> 86 yrs of age died at home of son in law W J <strong>Wilkerson<\/strong> at Glendale last<\/p>\n<p>Friday (March 8, 1918), burial taking place Sunday in Gum Creek Cemetery.\u00a0 She was the mother of 11 children,<\/p>\n<p>4 girls and 7 boys.\u00a0 Grandmother of 82 children and great-grandmother of over 100 children.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Last week <strong>Henry<\/strong> J <strong>Dorwart<\/strong> introduced himself to a Recruiting Officer and told him he was a<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 deserter from the army.\u00a0 He was placed in jail and will be detained until orders are received as<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 to what shall be done with him.\u00a0 Mr Dowart was member of 6<sup>th<\/sup> Div. HQ Staff and was<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 stationed at Fort Sam, San Antonio, TX and deserted something like 3 months ago.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>War death toll heavy in the county!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Henry<\/strong> <strong>Peake<\/strong> <strong>Walker<\/strong>, eldest son of W H <strong>Walker<\/strong>, who enlisted in navy about 2 yrs ago died in the League Island Hospital near Philadelphia, Pa last Sunday from pneumonia (March 10, 1918). The body was being shipped Monday night for Pensacola where burial will take place.\u00a0 Mr Walker was 23 yrs old, and held the position of first electrician on the U S Handcock.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jim<\/strong> <strong>Tom<\/strong> <strong>Edgar<\/strong>, son of Mr &amp; Mrs <strong>Stewart<\/strong> <strong>Edgar<\/strong> who was member of machine gun company in<\/p>\n<p>France was killed in action on Friday last (March 8, 1918). A telegram to that effect being received Sunday<\/p>\n<p>night from war department. He was 20 yrs of age and enlisted a year ago last Christmas,<\/p>\n<p>before the hostilities. (further article says he died in hospital not killed in action)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1918 Mar 21 <strong>Murial<\/strong> <strong>Watts<\/strong>,\u00a0 the 4yr daughter of Mr &amp; Mrs <strong>Frederick<\/strong> <strong>Watts<\/strong> died at the family home Saturday<\/p>\n<p>and was buried Sunday in the city cemetery. Several of the other children of the family<\/p>\n<p>have been quite sick. Mr &amp; Mrs Watts, Sandy Creek<\/p>\n<p>Stock Farm.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Miss <strong>Sarah<\/strong> A <strong>Long<\/strong>, born in 1832 in Ala, was united in marriage to Mr <strong>Laird<\/strong> and moved to<\/p>\n<p>Florida (see March 14) and at the age of 86 died at home of son in law March 8<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Remains of the late <strong>Henry<\/strong> L <strong>Peake<\/strong> arrived last night on the late train coming here from<\/p>\n<p>DeFuniak where it was shipped by mistake. From the depot it was moved to home of his<\/p>\n<p>Uncle, H Hahn.\u00a0 The remains will be born to Christ church at 2:30 and thence to St. John\u2019s<\/p>\n<p>Cemetery where interment will be make.
