Services at Valley Church on<\/p>\n<p>Friday afternoon, the remains brought from Pensacola to Argyle and from there taken<\/p>\n<p>to the cemetery. Mr Newton was a nephew of Judge Daniel Campbell and a cousin to<\/p>\n<p>Mrs C B McKinnon, Judge A G Campbell, Mrs John McKinnon, Miss Emma Campbell,<\/p>\n<p>Mr Bowers and Mr Ralph Campbell.\u00a0 He was readed in the Eucheeana Valley, his father<\/p>\n<p>being Rev. John Newton.\u00a0 Mr Newton was 45 was survived by his wife Miss Ria Baker,<\/p>\n<p>daughter of Rev R L Baker and young son Robert, 2 sisters Mrs G Axelson and Miss<\/p>\n<p>Christian Newton, aunt, Mrs Harrison, and uncle, Judge Daniel Campbell.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*Mr W B Wright&#8211; died in Pensacola Thursday morning (January 9, 1919). Mr Wright was formerly president<\/p>\n<p>of W B Wright Co, a timber and sawmill and for several years President of the Yellow<\/p>\n<p>River Railroad Company.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*Marion Hall, who killed Arnold Mitchell at a Christmas Social will be tried, so say a<\/p>\n<p>Grand jury.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*The Blackwell brothers, tried at Panama City, Bay County for the murder of old man<\/p>\n<p>Davis and wife in Okaloosa county and the death penalty assessed, were brought here<\/p>\n<p>last week and turned over to the care of Sheriff Thad Bell.\u00a0 Will Boyd who is charged<\/p>\n<p>with being an accessory to the Davis\u2019 murder and who gave testimony against the<\/p>\n<p>Blackwells is also in jail.\u00a0 (article doesn\u2019t name the Blackwell brothers)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*Mrs Jeff Ward died at Freeport Monday night (January 5, 1919). Mrs Ward leaves a husband and 3 sons.<\/p>\n<p>Two of her sons, Elvin and Ervin are in France.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*\u201cGrandpa\u201d Simmons, a citizen of Ponce de Leon neighborhood, died suddenly one<\/p>\n<p>day last week from influenza. He is survived by his aged widow and several children<\/p>\n<p>and many grandchildren.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*While hunting Christmas\u00a0 day, Louie Hall 13, shot and accidentally killed his brother,<\/p>\n<p>Walter, age 10, near Heath, not far from Andalusia.\u00a0 They are the sons of Mr &amp; Mrs Mark<\/p>\n<p>Hall.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1921 Jan 13&#8211; Mr P F <strong>Leight <\/strong>a highly esteemed resident of DeFuniak Spgs for the past many years,<\/p>\n<p>died at his home in this city last night after a lingering illness. Funeral was held at the<\/p>\n<p>home this afternoon with interment at DeFuniak cemetery with Masonic services. He<\/p>\n<p>is survived by his wife. Mr &amp; Mrs Leight celebrated their golden anniversary only a few<\/p>\n<p>years ago.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BRIDAL\/WEDDING ANNOUNCEMENT:\u00a0 Mr John L <strong>Moran<\/strong> &amp; Mrs Helen B <strong>Graham<\/strong> were married in Pensacola Tuesday. Mr Moran is the pilot of the airplane which has been here for past several weeks. The bride has been a guest of Mr &amp; Mrs Charles E <strong>Logan<\/strong> for some weeks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*1919 Jan 16&#8211; Murder trial set for Monday.\u00a0 Marion Hall, in jail for murder of Arnold Mitchell at the<\/p>\n<p>Christmas \u2018Frolic\u201d at the home of Charles Carter on the Florala road.\u00a0 Charles Carter was<\/p>\n<p>shot and badly wounded at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*The Girl in the Old Well. Western Florida is wondering who the girl was whose body<\/p>\n<p>was found in a well on an abandoned place, 2 miles south of Vernon. The following special<\/p>\n<p>was received by wire.\u00a0 Chipley, Fla.\u00a0 There is no identity of who the firl was or where she<\/p>\n<p>killed.\u00a0 Her clothing has been viewed by a number of parties, who thought some clue might<\/p>\n<p>be gathered.\u00a0 They feel confident from the name \u201cFlora Allen,\u201d stenciled on the corset<\/p>\n<p>cover worn by her and her other clothing that they will be able to apprehend the guilty<\/p>\n<p>party.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*Chipley, Fla, Jan 13 1919: Editor, DeFuniak Breeze:\u00a0\u00a0 An unknown woman was found dead<\/p>\n<p>2 miles south of Vernon in Washington Co, Florida, where she had been brutally murdered.<\/p>\n<p>The body was found in an old well on 7 January where it had been in the water for probably<\/p>\n<p>2 week more or less. The woman was probably from 16 to 25 yrs of age, clad in worn and<\/p>\n<p>patched clothing and wearing a pair of number 4 Hamilton-Brown lace shoes, with a rubber<\/p>\n<p>tap (cat\u2019s paw) on the heel.\u00a0 The soles of the shoes were badly worn.\u00a0 Among her clothing<\/p>\n<p>was a one-piece yellow dress, the inner side of the waistband of which was lined or patched<\/p>\n<p>with checked gingham.\u00a0 The yellow dress had a brown velvet collar.\u00a0 She also wore a dark<\/p>\n<p>waist, 2 plain white underskirts and a blue skirt, a black coat and a gauze broad-brim hat with<\/p>\n<p>wire rim.\u00a0 On a corset cover worn by her was the name written in ink, \u201cFlora Allens\u201d or<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlora Allen\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0 She measured 5 ft and 6 ins tall.\u00a0 Her hair was a dark brown, thin and not<\/p>\n<p>very long, but bore no evidence of having been cut.\u00a0 Her front teeth were almost perfect.<\/p>\n<p>There was no evidence of dental work.\u00a0 Her eyes wer brown, face was round with a short,<\/p>\n<p>small nose, short chin and neck.\u00a0\u00a0 Very respectfully, Ira A Hutchinson, State Attorney.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*Henry Evans, who lived near Glendale, died Monday night (January 13, 1919), leaving a widow and 3<\/p>\n<p>children.\u00a0 Mr Evans had been ill for several years and while not able to do hard work,<\/p>\n<p>made baskets, ax handles and other useful things for sale.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*Count Green, the 4 yr old son of Mr &amp; Mrs Walker S Green of Argyle, died Saturday<\/p>\n<p>afternoon (January 11, 1919) and was buried at the Valley church Sunday. The mother is still very ill but<\/p>\n<p>Mr Green is recovering.\u00a0 Another young son has also been ill.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*Mattie Lee, aged 15, daughter of Mr &amp; Mrs P J Mason, died Monday midnight (January 13, 1919). She<\/p>\n<p>was one of the sweetest girls in DeFuniak and a member of the Baptist Sunday school.<\/p>\n<p>The burial was at Andalusia.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BRIDAL\/WEDDING ANNOUNCEMENT: 1919 Jan 24&#8211; Mrs Mellie Smith, the widow of a printer who formerly worked in the Breeze office, writes the Breeze from Florala that she was married last Sunday to Mr Charles Davis, of Savannah, Ga, a fine boiler maker. The children, she assures us, are pleased. Davis is 56 yrs old and employed by the Jackson Lumber Company.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*Murdered woman is identified. The woman whose body was found in well.\u00a0 Her husband,<\/p>\n<p>Isaac Hand arrested in Ga and in jail in Marianna.\u00a0 Hand and his wife had been separated<\/p>\n<p>and he went to his mother-in-law, a Mrs Burch, near Bonifay.\u00a0 They left together in a<\/p>\n<p>buggy but when he arrived in Georgia, he was alone.\u00a0 The mother of Miss Flora Alford,<\/p>\n<p>daughter of Mr Chauncey Alford, of Bonifay, gave a discarded waist to Mrs Burch, who<\/p>\n<p>gave it to her daughter, Mrs Hand.\u00a0 The name \u201cFlora Alford\u201d was first deciphered as<\/p>\n<p>Flora Allen, was written with indelible ink on the waist.\u00a0 The waist was identified by Mrs.<\/p>\n<p>Alford.\u00a0 The trailing of Hand was easy.\u00a0 He denied that he slew his wife and that the last<\/p>\n<p>he saw of her, she was at Bonifay with a strange man.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*Mrs Hannah Davis, 73 yrs old, died at Freeport.\u00a0 She leaves 6 living children and a<\/p>\n<p>shower of grandchildren.\u00a0 She had lived at Freeport for 35 yrs or more.\u00a0 Her husband<\/p>\n<p>has been dead for years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*1919 Jan 30&#8211; Marion Hall convicted and sentenced to be hanged.\u00a0 Insanity was plead but<\/p>\n<p>since he was able to work, transact business and on that night he was not drunk, he<\/p>\n<p>shot Arnold in the back and shot him again as he lay dying.\u00a0 Hi s wife\u00a0 was pre-<\/p>\n<p>sent with their 3 little girls, one an infant at breast and his mother was present.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*Mrs Mollie Cannon, wife of J M Cannon, died Wednesday morning (January 29,1919), the 15 at<\/p>\n<p>the home of her daughter, Mrs J M Spears, in this city.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*The body of James Spears, a soldier, who died at Camp Shelby, of pneumonia,<\/p>\n<p>arrived at DeFuniak Tuesday.\u00a0 The funeral was at Leona church Wednesday. Spears,<\/p>\n<p>was about 22, went away to camp last July.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*Will Blackwell, on of the Blackwell brothers charged with the murder of old man<\/p>\n<p>Davis and wife in Okaloosa county, died in the Pensacola jail last week.\u00a0 He was<\/p>\n<p>under sentence of death, but his case had been appealed to the supreme court.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*In Memoriam::::\u00a0 Mrs Eliza Wilkerson&#8212; Christmas night when all the world was<\/p>\n<p>musing into a peaceful rest, after a pleasant day, when Death Reaper came to the<\/p>\n<p>Wilkerson home, 4 \u00bd miles north of DeFuniak and took the mother to her mansion pre-<\/p>\n<p>pared in the skies.\u00a0 She had spend the day at her youngest daughter\u2019s Mrs Jeffie Bells,<\/p>\n<p>returning home late in evening.\u00a0 About 8:30 she called her son Tommie to the bed and<\/p>\n<p>told him she was dying.\u00a0 She was born in Alabama in 1851.\u00a0 Her maiden name was<\/p>\n<p>Wilkerson. She married Henry Wilkerson in May of 1866, to which were born 11 children,<\/p>\n<p>7 boys and 4 girls, 10 of whom still survive her.
