{"id":3335,"date":"2025-03-30T15:27:23","date_gmt":"2025-03-30T20:27:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/waltonpast2present.com\/wcgs\/?p=3335"},"modified":"2025-03-30T15:52:47","modified_gmt":"2025-03-30T20:52:47","slug":"the-breeze-november-21-1935","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/waltonpast2present.com\/wcgs\/2025\/03\/the-breeze-november-21-1935\/","title":{"rendered":"The Breeze \u2013 November 21, 1935"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>HERE\u2019S THE DeFUNIAK NEWS OF INTEREST TO OLD TIMERS<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(Thirty-four years ago\u2013from the Breeze of November 21, 1901.)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The first white frost of the season was here Saturday morning.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We ponder the same question now: &#8220;Wonder why a thoroughly good commercial college would not pay in DeFuniak Springs?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Postmaster John Astleford (now of Biloxi, Miss.) was referred to by the Breeze as one of West Florida&#8217;s outstanding farmers, pointing to his farm on the Eucheeanna road, as a proof of the assertion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/80740206\/william-lee-cawthon\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/80740206\/william-lee-cawthon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">W. L. Cawthon<\/a> &#8220;served a very enjoyable game supper to a number of friends, at which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/82358562\/george-p-henry\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/82358562\/george-p-henry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">G. P. Henry<\/a> represented the medical profession; C. L. Hayes and W. S. Cawthon the schools; Dan&#8217;l Cawthon the bar; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/83405993\/william-thomas-may\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/83405993\/william-thomas-may\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">W. T. May<\/a> and T. S. Latz the mercantile interests, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/91669674\/royal-watters-storrs\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/91669674\/royal-watters-storrs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">R. W. Storrs<\/a> the press.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(Thirty years ago&#8211;from the Breeze of November 16, [1905].)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The county commissioners voted to buy a pair of bloodhounds from Perry Clark for $90.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walton county&#8217;s assessed valuation was increased $312,415 over the previous year, and DeFuniak&#8217;s part of this increase was $53,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(Twenty years ago&#8211;from the Breeze of November 18, 1915.)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/83352715\/john-angus-mcdonald\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/83352715\/john-angus-mcdonald\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">J. A. McDonald<\/a> was recommended for DeFuniak&#8217;s postmaster to succeed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/83315970\/benjamin-pickett-morris\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/83315970\/benjamin-pickett-morris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">B. P. Morris<\/a>, resigned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Mr. and Mrs. Ide Stinson returned from their honeymoon Saturday, and are at the home of the groom&#8217;s aunt, Mrs. Stewart, on Eleventh street.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Breeze insisted that there was &#8220;nothing so good for a cold&#8221; as a mixture of equal parts of lemon juice and glycerine.'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The &#8216;Old Spanish Trail&#8217; scout car left Mobile yesterday to run over the proposed &#8216;Old Spanish Trail&#8221; as far east as Jacksonville.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(Fifteen years ago&#8211;from the Breeze of November 18, 1920.)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Synod of Florida had just closed a three-day session here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/38380561\/charley-bell\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/38380561\/charley-bell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Charley Bell<\/a> was [killed] in an auto accident on the DeFuniak-Ponce de Leon road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Robbers took somewhere between $300 and $500 from the W. E. [Parish] store, when that institution was burglarized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Build for permanency and beauty: Permanent as the pyramids and as beautiful as Venus,&#8221; announced the Southern Petronite Company, a local building block manufacturing concern, in a full-page Breeze ad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(Ten years ago&#8211;from the Breeze of November 19, 1925.)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By a vote of approximately 4 to 1, voters of DeFuniak Springs authorized a $78,000 bond issue for [street] and other improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Methodists in annual conference at Mobile, returned Rev. J. F. McLeod to this church, and selected DeFuniak Springs as the meeting place for the 1926 conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wm. H.
