Mrs Frances Pricilla Wheeler, aged 96, of Freeport died Wednesday [April 28, 1965] in local hospital. She was native of Coffee Co, Ala and had resided in Freeport since 1960. Services held Saturday from Black Creek Methodist church with interment followed in church cemetery. Survivors are one son, J W Wheeler, 4 daus Mrs Cora Lee Bishop, Mrs Jane Simmons, Mrs Mary Frances Richards, and Mrs Lizzie Simmons, 9 gr ch and 13 gr gr. James Saul Melvin, aged 62 yrs, died Saturday [May 1, 1965], a native of Ponce de Leon but resided in Freeport since 1904. Services Tuesday [May 4, 1965] with interment in Hatcher Cemetery. He is survived by his widow, Mrs Bessie Melvin, 3 son, Ned, Fred and Grady Melvin; one dau Mrs Bill Caswell; 2 bros, H P and Warren Melvin, 3 sis Mrs Maude Morris, Mrs Annie Blankenship and Mrs Minnie Gay; 4 gr and 1 gr gr. Mrs Minnie Bell Alberson, aged 72, of Gaskin died Sunday [May 2, 1965] in a Geneva Co hospital. She was a native and lifelong resident of Walton Co. Services were Wednesday [May 5, 1965] with interment in Gaskin cemetery. Survivors include 2 sons, Vernon and Hughey Alberson, 3 daus Mrs Pearlie Mae Henderson, Mrs Gladys Adams and Mrs Estelle Simpler; 2 bros B D and L G Alford; 4 sis Mrs Mattie Warren, Mrs Donnie Duke, Mrs Kate Dean and Mrs Rose Duke; 14 gr and 10 gr gr. Mr Verbon Richard Owen, aged 45, died Friday [April 30, 1965] at his home. He was a native of Oneonta, Al and resided in DeFuniak since 1954. Services held Sunday [May 2, 1965] at Oneonta, Al with interment in Oak Hill Cemetery there.  Survivors include his wife, Mrs Jean Owen, and son Michael Owen, 3 dau Valerie, Shannon and Jeffire Ann Owen; 3 bros, W E, Lloyd J and Hilton; 2 sis Mrs Grace Maddox and Mrs Paul Hule and his father B J Owen of Oneonta, Ala. The DeFuniak Herald – April 22, 1965 Obituaries

John Frank Mitchell, age 80, of DeFuniak Springs died Saturday Apr 17 in a San Antonio, TX hospital. Services were held here with interment in Euchee Valley Hospital. Survivors are 3 sons Edward M, Richard W, & R C Mitchell, 3 daus Mrs Earl Kilgore, Mrs Lois Margaret Ritiz & Mrs Don Kilgore; one bro Richard M Mitchell and 14 grandchildren.

Carl Gill, age 81, passed away at his residence, Friday Apr 9th.  He was a native of Wisconsin and has been a resident of DeF since retiring from the U S Navy in summer of 1964. Services were held in Nekoosa, Wisc on Wednesday Apr 14th. Surviving are his sisters, Mrs S E Mear, Mrs G E Nolap & Mrs R N Nelson. Card of thanks (same pg) from sisters listed as Mrs Rene Mear, Mrs Esther Nolop and Mrs Carolyn Nelson.

Hogan Darnell died at his home in Anniston, Ala on Apr 4th.

The DeFuniak Herald – April 8, 1965 Obituaries

Mr Max Graef, 81 years of age, was a resident of DeFuniak Springs since 1955. He died Friday Apr 2 in a local hospital. A native of Chicago, Ill.  Services held Saturday with cremation followed at Southern Cremation in Jacksonville. He is survived by one son Kenneth W Graef and one grandson.

Carlton Peacock 70, of Malvern Al died Mar 27. He was born in Geneva Co and lived in Malvern for past 42 yrs.  Burial in New Hope Cemetery.  Survivors include his wife Mrs Annie Jane Peacock, 3 daughters Mrs Clara Mae Turner, Mrs James McCommin and Mrs James H V Good; 2 sons, Buford & Bronzell Peacock, a brother Freddie Peacock; a sister Mrs Ellen Stevens; his step mother Mrs Chaffer Brock, 2 half sisters, Maudie Peacock & Mrs Berle Finkles; 11 gr ch and one gr grandchild.

The DeFuniak Herald – April 1, 1965 Obituaries

Terrell Peak 59 of Westville was killed Tuesday by an automobile as he was walking on the highway near there. Trooper Johnny H Braxton of Century, driver of the car, was off duty and returning from Holmes Co to Escambia Co when he saw Peak in the road.  Braxton said he swerved to avoid the pedestrian but that Peak jumped in front of his car. No charges were filed.

Joseph A Burchfield 63,  & his wife Ida Bell Burchfield were both killed in an automobile accident Saturday Mar 27 in Luverne, Ala.  Mr Burchfield had lived in Walton Co for the past 3 yrs and his remains were transferred to Plummer Funeral Home in Kentucky for services.  Mrs Burchfield resided in Walton Co for past 23 yrs. Services were held Tuesday with interment in Cluster Springs Cemetery. She is survived by 3 sons, Tommy Bell, Dannie Ray Bell and Ronnie Bell; 2 daus Miss Gloria Gene Bell, & Mrs Margaret Ann Adams, 5 step sons, Walton Bell, Walter Bell, Bobbie Bell, Alvin Bell, & J R Bell; 3 bros James E Reader & D J Reader Jr and Louis Reader; 2 sisters Mrs C  L Curry & Mrs Proctor Barnett; 12 gr ch also survived.

James Danrolph Clark age 31 of Huntsville, Ala formerly of DeF passed away Monday, March 22 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Mr Clarke is survived by his wife, Mildred; 2 daus Mrs Barbara Cook and Miss Elaine Clark; one son, James Edward Clark, 11 yrs; his mother Mrs J E Clark; 2 sisters Mrs Faye Kinsey and Mrs H L (Sue) Jones; one bro W Kindal Clark and one grandson.  Services on Thursday with graveside services Friday in Augusta, Ga.

Mrs Nancy Juatrene Miller age 38 and her 7 yr old daughter Frances Sharlene Miller were both killed in an automobile accident Tuesday Mar 16 in Belle Glade, Fla. They were residents of Bell Glade but previous residents of the Darlington Community. Services were held Saturday with interment in Limestone Cemetery.  Mrs Miller is survived by her husband Boyd Miller; her parents Mr & Mrs T B Nolin; 2 bro Huey Nolin & Earnest Nolin; 2 sis Mrs Lottie Singleton and Mrs Lessie McGowan.

PRISON SENTENCE NOTICE

Andrew J Busbee Jr of Pensacola was sentenced here Wednesday to 12 yrs in state prison after his conviction at January term of circuit court.  He was convicted of manslaughter in traffic death of a 14 yr old newsboy in Escambia County. He was tried and acquitted of the hit and run charge in Mar 1964.

OBITUARY

Mr Aree Oscar Bray, age 76 of Argyle died Thursday Mar 18 at his home. He was a native and lifelong resident of Walton Co.  Services were Sunday with interment in Euchee Valley Cemetery. Survivors include his widow, Mrs Ola Bray, 2 sons; H A and Alfred Q Bray; 2 daus Mrs Eldive Carpenter & Mrs Viola Brown; one bro G W Bray.

Mrs Maude Spence Sconiers 72 yrs, a native and lifelong resident of Walton died Saturday Mar 13.  Services were held Monday with interment in Southwide Cemetery. She is survived by one son, Capt. Kenneth D Sconiers and one dau Mrs Glennis McGregor; 4 bros C H, H W, Ralph & Fate Spence, 5 gr ch and one gr gr.

Mrs Pearl Commander 70 yrs, died at her home in Myrtle Grove Sunday Mar 14. Mrs Commander was a native of Covington Co, AL but resided in Pensacola for the past 6 yrs. Services on Tuesday with interment in the New Ponce De Leon Cemetery. She is survived by 3 bros, Homer, Foy & Charles A Mason; 1 sister Mrs Minnie Lee Grubbs.

Mr Tommie Moore, 69 yrs died in Oteen Veteran Hospital, Oteen, NM.  He was a native of Mississippi but resided in DeF for past 5 yrs. Services were held Sunday with interment in Magnolia. He is survived by his wife Mrs Mattie Lou Moore, 2 step sons James & Lamar Odom; one st dau Mrs Bobbie Lou Padgett and six grandchildren.

Miss Analu Jefferies, 59, a resident of Washington D. C. died Friday Mar 4th in Georgetown University Medical Center Hospital. She was a native of DeFuniak Springs and resided in D.C. for past 30 yrs. Services were conducted Sunday in D.C., with graveside services in DeFuniak Springs on Wednesday at Magnolia Cemetery. Survivors are 2 brothers, Clarence and Joe Jefferies; 4 sisters, Mrs. Rosa Langston, Miss Alma Jefferies, Mrs. Bert Pero and Mrs. G. D. Knapp.

Jesse Jack Nowling 58, died Thursday March 4 in local hospital. Lifelong resident and native of Walton County  Services conducted Saturday with internment in Magnolia. Survivors include his wife, Allie Nowling, two sons, Elmer Eugene and Jack Harold; 4 daughters, Mrs. Willie Mae McKee, Mrs. Lanice Latrell Garrett, Mrs. Patricia Kittrell and Mrs. Mary Carolyn Crawford; three brothers, Sam, Alec and Charlie Nowling; and one sister, Mrs. Missouri Mitchum, six grandchildren also survive.

William Asbury Webster 66, died Saturday February 27. He was a native of Coffee County, Ala. Services on Monday near Gaskin with interment in Gaskin cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. W. A. Webster, three sons, Marion, William and Thomas Webster; one daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Holley; one brother, Ben Webster, five sisters, Mrs. Ellefair Sizemore, Mrs. Lissie Lee, Mrs. Lou Gavins, Mrs. Eunice Phillips, and Mrs. Minnie Jane Cordell, 21 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

James S .Warren 83, died Tuesday February 23 after a long illness in Geneva County, AL hospital. He was a native and lifelong resident of Walton. Services were conducted Thursday with interment in Limestone Cemetery with Masonic rights. His only survivors were his wife, Mrs. Mattie Warren and a son, Braxton Warren.

Mrs Virginia Spikes Curry 74, died Wednesday February 24 at her home.  She was a native of Black, AL but resided in Walton County since 1920. Services were held Friday with interment in Magnolia Cemetery. She is survived by spouse, George Thomas Curry; two daughters, Mrs. C. T. Straughn and Mrs. J. A. McCall; two brothers, R. F. and Joe Spikes; two sisters, Mrs. W. C. Hand and Mrs. A. G. Thomas; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Ida Martin Brannon 70 yrs, died Sunday March 7 in local hospital. She was a native of Donalsonville, GA but had resided in DeFuniak Springs for the past 50 yrs. Survivors include spouse, Mr. Rozier J. M. Brannon, one daughter, Mrs. Ines Hobbs, two sons, Grady M. and D. B. ‘Buddy’ Brannon; one brother Frank Martin; 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Services were conducted Tuesday with burial in Steele Cemetery.

Mrs Sarah Casey 56 yrs passed away Tuesday March 2. She was a native of Alabama and resided in DeFuniak Springs for past 40 yrs. Survivors include he widower, Mr. Oscar Casey, her father, Mr. George W. Miller, two sons, Clyde Denny and Harold Denny; one brother, Percy Miller, two sisters; Mrs. George Haigh and Mrs. Walter Hurley. Services were conducted Thursday with burial in Magnolia Cemetery.

She is survived by 4 daus Mrs Frances Dykes, Mrs Bryon Keen, Mrs Ruth W Ward and Mrs Lloyd Casey; one son Harry Lane Booth; one sister, Mrs. Rayford Jones; 12 gr ch and 15 gr grs.

James Monroe Gainey 87, died Friday Feb 26 in a Bonifay nursing home, and was a native of Walton Co. Services were conducted Sunday with interment followed in Magnolia Cemetery.  Survivors include one gr daughter, Mrs Evelyn Hembree, 4 gr grandchildren, Mary Kay, Frankie Jean, Evelyn Fay & Joe Russell Hembree; and one nephew W R Gainey.

Dewey Comer Ward 51, died Saturday morning.  Mr Ward was a native of Samson, AL. and has been a resident of DeF for past 36 yrs.  He was Town Marshall for term 1959-1960, and Mayor 1961-1962. Survivors include widow Mrs Claudia B Ward, father Mr Charlie A Ward, 3 daughters — Mrs Sandra Beavers, Mrs Mary Hoover & Miss Linda Sue Ward, one son, Phillip Carson Ward, 2 sisters Mrs Onna Mae Ellis of Enterprise, AL and Mrs Opal Parker, 2 bros, Coley O & Charlie A Ward Jr. Services held Sunday burial followed in Magnolia.
