Mr Louie Weeks 35, of Camp Creek was killed instantly Sep 30, in an auto accident

in France, where he was stationd with the U S Army, he was a career serviceman, having

served 17 years.  Services were held from Leonia Baptist church Friday with burial followed

in Leonia cemetery.  Survivors include his parents; Mr & Mrs Joseph Weeks; 3 sisters,

Mrs Bertha Williams, Mrs Clara McDuffie & Mrs Sally Moore.

 

Mr Joe Evans Deurell 72, of Jackson Still community died Thursday Oct 11.  Mr Deurell

was a native of Covington Co Ala and had lived in Jackson Still for 21 yrs.  Services

were held Thursday Oct 13 from Cluster Springs church with interment followed in church

cemetery.  Survivors included his wife, Mrs Elizabeth Deurell, on son, Louis Deurell; one

brother L C Durell and a sister Mrs Delia Bates.

The DeFuniak Herald – October 13, 1960 Obituaries

Mrs Rosa Lee Gantt Sterenberg, 98, of Destin,  died Oct 9 Sunday in a Gadsden Co.

Hospital.  Mrs Sterenberg was born in Lexington, S C in January 1862. She moved to

Destin 5 yrs ago from Chipley but greater part of her life was spend in Ponce de Leon.

Funeral services were held in Ponce de Leon Tuesday Oct 11, with interment in

Magnolia cemetery. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs Viola L Fulmer; one son,

May H Sterenberg, 4 grandchildren & 10 gr grands.

 

Infant baby Redmon, baby daughter of Mrs & Mrs J W Redmon of Leonia, died October

9, in a local hospital. Graveside services were held Monday from the Leonia cemetery,

with interment followed in Leonia cemetery.  Survivors besides parents include the

paternal grandparents, Mr & Mrs C M Redmon, maternal grandfather Mr Eugene

Martin, and maternal grandmother, Mrs Edna Smith.

 

Durward Commander 46, of Ponce de Leon, died Thursday Oct 6 in a Bonifay hospital.

A native & lifelong resident of Holmes Co, he was a teacher in public schools for several

years.  Services were held Saturday from Northside Baptist church, with interment in

the New Ponce de Leon cemetery.   Survivors include his parents, Mr & Mrs D Com

mander.

 

Robert Jackson Kelly 38, passed away in a Pensacola hospital, on Oct 4.  A native of

Birmingham, Ala and resident of DeFuniak for past 4 yrs, a veteran of WWII.  Services

were held Thursday from First Baptist Church, burial followed in Magnolia.  Mr. Kelly

is survived by his widow, Mrs Jean C Kelly, 2 daughters, Linda & Sue; his parents,

Mr & Mrs A G Kelly; 4 sisters, Mrs Henry Futch, Mrs Frank McCoy, Mrs Robert Glass,

& Mrs Winston Sacher.

The DeFuniak Herald – September 29, 1960 Obituaries

John Frank Alford 80, died Saturday Sep 27.  She was a native of Darlington but

had lived in DeFuniak for past 10 yrs.  Services were held Tuesday from Limestone

Baptist church interment followed in the church cemetery.  Survivors include 3 sons,

Lamar, Howard, Dewey; 3 daughters Mrs Mytrle Pryor, Mrs Ester Gainey and Mrs

Mary Lou Atkinson; one brother Thermond; 3 sisster Mrs C W Miles, Mrs H Lawrence;

& Mrs Alice Burchannon, 15 grandchildren & 8 gr grands.

 

Daniel Angus Carroll 60, of Leonia was found dead of a bullet wound in the chest in

his backyard on Monday. Coroners jury will convene Tuesday to determine how the

wound was inflicted.  He was a native and life long resident of Holmes Co. Survivors

include his widow, Mrs Malkey Carroll, 2 sons Daniel Angus Jr & Randall; 4 daughters,

Misses Gracie Ann, Ruthie, & Lavell Carroll and Mrs Martha Crowder, 2 brothers, John

& Will Carroll, 3 sisters, Mrs Abbie Smothers, Mrs Ida Broxton & Mrs MaMry

Padgett; and 2 grandchildren.

 

Mrs Barbara Lillie Rushing Smith, 20 of Leonia died Saturday.  She was a native of Ponce

de Leon but had lived inLeonia for several months. Survivors included one daughter, Miss

Barbara Ellen Smith, parents, Mr & Mrs Esker Rushing; 4 sissters Mrs Rube Hare, Mrs

Harold Deering, Mrs Robert Spence and Miss Alice Rushing; 4 brothers; Theodore,

Thedwell, William Albert & Donald Rushing; paternal grandmother Mrs Polly Ann

Rushing and maternal grandmother, Mrs Lou H Burch.

 

James Larkin Miller 78, passed away Sunday. He was native of Ala and had been a resi-

dent of Walton for past 15 yrs, but at time of his death was a resident of Darlington.

Services were held Tuesday from Sandy Creek Baptist church with interment followed

in church cemetery.   Survivors include his wife, Mrs Maggie Miller, one daughter Mrs

Vera Burgess, 2 sons, Major & Grady; one sister Mrs Willie Henderson; 2 grandchildren,

& 2 gr grands.

Angus Leslie Edwards, 52, of Pleasant Grove died Tuesday Sep 13 in Montgomery

Veterans Hospital.  He was a native & life-long resident of Walton, as well as a veteran of WWII.

Services were held from Pleasant Grove Baptist church with interment followed in

the church cemetery. Survivors include father & step mother Mr & Mrs John C

Edwards; 2 brothers Carl & Clayton Edwards, 2 sisters Mrs J H Laird & Mrs

Hazel Diamond.

Mrs Alice Pippin 84, died Wednesday at the home of daughter, Mrs P W Miles.

Mrs Pippin was native of Escambia Co, Al and had resided here for 15 yrs.  Survivors,

6 daughters, Mrs Miles, Mrs J W Ware, Mrs Klien McDonald, Mrs T H Hinote, Mrs C A

Sanford, Mrs G V Bovenkirk; 3 sons Rudolph, Calvin & Eric Pippin, one sister, Mrs

Charlie Burlson, one brother Horace Johnson, 17 grand children, 29 gr grands, and

2 gr gr grands.

 

Mrs Rena Mae McLean 72, died at home of her daughter Mrs Jeanette Rushing Saturday

Sep 10.  She was a native of Coffee Co, Ala but lived in Walton since 1910.  Funeral

Services Tuesday Sep 13 from Euchee Valley church with interment followed in Euchee

Valley cemetery. Survivors include 4 sons: Curtis, P K, Furrow, & James; 5 daughters,

Mrs Inez Simmons, Mrs Jeanette Rushing, Mrs Margurite Holles, Mrs Alfreda Gomillion,

Mrs Gertrude Simmons; a brother James E Vance; a sister Mrs Minnie Jones, 8 grandchildren,

And 5 gr grands.

 

Mrs Celina Rivard 89, died at the home of her son Mr Adrien Rivard Friday. Mrs Rivard

was born in Quebec, Canada, Oct 30 1870 and moved to DeFuniak 19 yrs ago.  Services

were held Monday from St Margarets’ Catholic Church , with Rosary held Sunday, and

interment followed in Magnolia.  Survivors include 2 sons, Adrian & Armand Rivard, 5

grandchildren and 1 gr grand.

 

Mrs Sophia Yartem 80, died Friday Sep 9.  She is survived by her daughter Mrs Mary Sheff,

3 gr children, Mrs Anna Yacho, Mrs Helen Stram, & Mrs Barbara Hellista, 9 gr grands, &

9 gr gr grands.  Services were held Monday at St Margarets, with interment in Magnolia.

 

Patrick Herman Bludworth, 72, died Saturday.  He was native of Pt Washington and life long

resident of Walton. Services were held Monday with interment at Magnolia. He is survived

by his wife Mrs Julia Bludworth, 2 daughters,Mrs Geraldine Stefflemire, & Mrs J T Crone;

2 sons Patrick & John Frank; one brother Adrian; 2 sisters Mrs Gladys Hatcher & Mrs

Ethel Lathinghouse.

 

Mrs Ardelle Clark, 61, died Monday, she was a native of Coffee Co, Ala and former resi-

dent of DeFuniak, for the past 10 yrs she has lived in Orlando, Fla.  Services were held

Wednesday from Euchee Valley church, with interment in church cemetery  Mrs Clark

is survived by husband, Mr Henry L Clark of Orlando, 6 daughters, Mrs Virginia Howell,

Mrs Alice Cox, Mrs Joanne Truesdell, Mrs Stell Fisher, Mrs Julia Hussey,

And Mrs Bobby Hattaway; 3 sons Heber, James T & W A; 3 brothers, Lorental, Ross,

& Larking Armstrong; 2 sisters Mrs R T Lee & Mrs Colon Douglass; 45 grandchildren, &

7 gr grands.

 

James C Sconiers 64, died Thursday Sep 1.  He was a native of Walton but had lived

in Jacksonville more than 38 yrs. He was retired from US Postal Transportation Service.

A veteran of WWI.  Survived by widow, Mrs Ella Mae Sconiers, 3 daughters Mrs H L

Gaines, Mrs Lucile Hicks & Mrs D N Helms; a brother W W Sconiers, 3 sisters,

Mrs Julie Pickens, Mrs Annie Wright & Mrs Pearl O’Pry.  Services were held saturdy

with burial in Magnolia.

Silas Doyle Murphy, 56 of Tampa, died Thursday, Aug 25. He was a native of Ponce de Leon,

and had been a resident of Tampa for 20 yrs.  Elder Murphy had been a minister of the

Primitive Baptist Church sine 1945.  Services were conducted Saturday from Primitive

Church with interment in the Fellowship Cemetery. Survivors: his widow Mrs Rilla Murphy,

2 brothers, Avery & Harvey Murphy, 2 sisters Mrs Mary Nell Andrews and Mrs Myrabell

Alford.

The DeFuniak Herald – September 1, 1960 Obituaries

Clarence N Trotman, 52, died Thursday Aug 25 at a local hospital, a native and life-long resident of DeFuniak Springs.  He is survived by his mother, Mrs Annie Wright, one sister Mrs Claudie McElvey and 3 brothers, Cecil, Johnny & Ernest Wright all of Pensacola.  Services were held Saturday morning with elders of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with interment in Magnolia.

Elijah L ‘Lite’ Lewis 75, of Ponce de Leon died Sunday Aug 21 at his home.  Services were held Tuesday from Oak Grove Baptist church, with interment in Mt Zion cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Mrs Lee Anna Lewis, 3 daughters Mrs Roy Anderson, Mrs Leroy McMilan & Mrs Mildred Lasley, one son Arthur Lewis; one brother Richard Lewis, 2 sisters Mrs Caroline Preachers & Mrs Winnie Houland and 3 grandchildren.

MEMORIAL NOTICE
Mrs Cora Lee Hall, 68 of Defuniak, died Saturday Aug 13.  Services were conducted from Steel Church with interment followed in Steele Church cemetery. Survivors: her husband, Harry Hall, 2 sons, Ellson & Huber Hall, 2 daughters, Mrs Claude Adkison & Miss Evelyn Hall; 4 brothers, C H, Ralph, H W & T R Spence; A sister, Mrs Maude Sconiers.

Mrs Anna King Anderson 64, died Sunday Aug 21 at her home.  A native and life-

long resident of Walton, she resided in DeFuniak for the past 50 yrs.  Funeral was held at

3:00 from the First Baptist church with interment in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery.  Mrs

Anderson is survived by one son, Albert J Anderson, 2 daughters, Mrs Sallie Mae Parker,

and Mrs Jeanette McDinald; 2 brothers D R King & J B King; one sister Mrs Alice K

Wadsworth; 5 grandchildren & 4 gr grands.

 

Mrs Janette T Lula Fountain 89, died Saturday Aug 20 at the home of her daugher, Mrs

Ella Mae Jones in north Santa Rosa Co.  She had lived with her daughter for the past

year, but was a native of Milton.  Survivors are Mrs Jones, Mrs Allie Heath, 3 sons,

Eddie Lee, M T & J Conrad Fountain, 3 half brothers,  Leon, George & Arthur Lewis,

one half sister Mrs Fred West and 16 grandchildren.

 

 

MEMORIAL NOTICES

Arnie Lee Henley was born Aug 24 1915 to the late Mr & Mrs W M

Henley of Glendale, Fla.  He served 4 years in U S Navy, was at Pearl Harbor on

Dec 7 1941.  He was married Apr 12 1948 to the former Miss Joyce Loraine

Sowell of Everett, Washington.  He was a photographer by trade and had a studio

at Elk Grove, Calif, at the time of his death Jun 24 at Oakland Navy Hospital.

Funeral was held Jun 19 in Oak Hill Memorial Chapel of Roses in San Jose, Calif.

Interment was private at Oak Hill Memorial Park, San Jose, Calif.  He leaves a

wife, Joyce, son Walter, daughter Arna; 2 sisters Mrs W E Cox & Rose Henley;

3 brothers King, Bill & Herbert Henley, 4 nephews, 6 nieces and one grand niece.

 

 

James Luther  ‘Newt’ Godwin born Aug 20 1923 to Mr & Mrs Luther Godwin.

He was a veteran of WWII, seeing abt 3 yrs overseas duty.  He was married to the

former Miss Robbie Register of Bonifay.  To this union was born 2 sons, Douglass

and Charles.  Newt departed this life on Aug 5 1960 in the Veterans Hospital in

Birmingham, Ala. Survivors also include his parents, Luther & Clyde, his brother,

Jerry, aunts, uncles & cousins.   He was laid to rest at Gum Creek Cemetery on Aug 9.

 

MORE OBITUARIES

William M Pennington, 34, Martha Pennington his 4 yr-old daugher, & Mrs Elvie Karina Gillis, 22,

his sister, died early Sunday Aug 21 after being involved in an auto accident north of

Milton.  Mr Pennington & Mrs Gillis died instantly and the child died about 2 hrs later

in a Santa Rosa Hospital.   Mr Pennington’s wife, Mrs Emily Lue Pennington, 30, died

early Monday in a Pensacola hospital.   The family was enroute to visit Mr & Mrs Joseph

H Pennington, the deceased parents.   Both were natives of Holmes co.  In addition to

his parents, Mr Pennington is survived by a son, Joseph Everette and a daughter, Mary

Louise. The Pennington family was living in Chalmette, La.  Mrs Gillis, besides her

parents is survived by a 3 yr old son, Richard Angus, who was uninjuried in the wreck

and her husband Angus D Gillis of New Orleans. Both are survived by 2 brothers,

Lloyd F & Fred W; 2 sisters, Mrs Emily Louise Johnson, and Miss Lois Pennington.

Martha Lou, the 4 yr child is survived by a brother and sister, paternal grandparents,

and maternal grandmother Mrs Everette Griggs.  Funeral arrangements at this time

were incomplete.

Travis Lee Straughn, 81, died at his home in Cantonment Saturday. Services were

held Monday at Gum Creek Primative in Glendale.  He was a native of Rose Hill, Ala.

Private services were held at home of daughter Mrs Agnes Richards before the church

services.  Besides his daughter Mrs Richards, survivors are 3 sons; Roy D, Carlos M &

Walter L Straughn; 2 sisters Mrs C A Chesser & Mrs Martha A Laird; 12 grandchildren

and 20 gr grands.

 

Mrs Luray Weeks, 44, died Friday Aug 12.  She was a native of Darlington, Fla and had

lived in Gaskin for the past 10 yrs.  Services were held at 3:00 from Leonia Baptist

church, with interment following in the church cemetery.  Mrs Weeks is survived by her

husband, Mr B H Weeks, one son James Coy Stafford, 2 daughters Miss Merlene

Stafford, and Miss Elizabeth Weeks; 3 brothers M H, E & Corbin Weeks; 2 sisters,

Mrs Onvie McDuffie and Mrs Amy Gilmore.

The DeFuniak Herald – July 28, 1960 Obituaries

W L Casey Sr, died Wednesday Jul 20 at local hospital from operation from which he

never recovered.  He was born in Barbour Co, Ala July 25, 1883 and was 76 yrs. He brought

his family to DeFuniak in 1915.  Survived by his wife, Mrs Madeline Casey, 2 sons, M J

& W L Jr; 6 daughters; Mrs Myrtle Norton, Mrs Ruth Lindsey, Mrs Ruby Johns, Mrs

Claudia B Ward; Mrs Wilke Durden; Mrs Billie Brundage; 2 brothers, E L & N L Casey;

and 26 grandchildren and 15 gr grands.

 

Mrs Sarah Anderson Hobbs 78, of Pleasant Grove, died Monday Jul 25.  She was a native

and lifelong resident of Walton Co.  Services were held Wednesday Jul 27 at the Pleasant

Grove Baptist with interment followed in the church cemetery.  Survivors are her husband,

J W HOBBS, one son, Walton Hobbs, 2 daughters, Mrs Mary Wiggins & Mrs Leo Kunkel;

2 brothers George & Rev T J Anderson; 4 sisters, Mrs L E Gill, Mrs H H Hobbs, Mrs

Mollie Ray & Mrs Lillie Grant; 9 grandchildren & 3 gr grands.

 

Clyde F Campbell, 50, died Friday July 22 in a Crestview hospital.  He was a WWII veteran,

and former county attorney for Okaloosa Co.  Survivors include his wife, Mrs Louise Simmons

Campbell, 3 sisters, Mrs J A Zorn, Mrs J S Croft & Mrs A B Champion.  Services were held

Sunday at the Laurel Hill Presbyterian church, with interment held in Almarant Cemetery.

 

John H Messer, 73 died Saturday Jul 23 in a local hospital.  Mr Messer was a native of Newton,

Ala and a resident in DeFuniak since 1939. Survivors are his wife, Mrs Mary Messer, 4 sons,

Alton, Bert, T F & Robert; 4 daughters Mrs Esther Hoover, Mrs Lessie Mae Flemming, Mrs

Trimi V Nobles and Mrs Bonnie Bray; 3 sisters, Mrs Quilla Bradshaw, Mrs Mary Howard

and Mrs Hattie Taylor, 25 grandchildren & 4 gr grands.  Services wer held Monday at

Clear Springs church near Florala, Al with burial in Clear Springs cemetery.
