Mr Arthur Slay 87, died at his home Wednesday, a native of Bonifay, he had moved

to Defuniak in 1946.  Services were held Friday with interment in Magnolia.  He is

survived by his wife, Mrs Arthur Slay, 3 daughters, Mrs Inez Vice, Mrs Abelene

Simpler, & Mrs Nelle Jean Williamson; 3 brothers W L, GT, & H B Slay, 3 sisters;

Mrs Argie Price, Mr W J Tew, and Mrs Ottis Webb and 9 grandchildren.

 

Miss Mary Ernestine Sowell 82, died at local hospital on Sunday. A native of Washington

Co. Miss Sowell resided in Bridge Creek community for the past 22 years. Services

were conducted Monday from Sandy Creek Baptist church. She is survived by 4

nephews; Harvey, Avery, Doyle Murphy and John D Sowell; 6 nieces Mrs Mary

Young, Mrs W W Clayton, Mrs Henry Hawkins, Mrs Ernestine Gross, Mrs Marynell

Andrews & Mrs Myrabell Alford.

The DeFuniak Herald – January 28, 1960 Obituary

1960 January 28

 

Cecil Jones, 50, of Pensacola died Sunday morning in a hospital there.  Mr Jones

was a WWII veteran.  Surviving are his wife Mrs Lillian Jones and a daughter Susan

Ann Jones. Services held Wednesday in Richards Memorial Methodist Church, with

Burial in Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola.

The DeFuniak Herald – January 21, 1960 Obituaries

George W Sanders 71, of Leonia died Friday.  A native of Dothan he has resided here

for past 41 yrs.  Services were conducted Sunday from Leonia Baptist with interment

following in the church cemetery.  He is survived by wife Mrs Dovie Sanders, 4 son

Thomas, Foy, Shelby & George Sanders Jr; 6 daughters, Mrs James Brannon, Mrs J C

Homes, Mrs Ralph Bass, Mrs Guy Turner, Mrs Ivy Barrow and Mrs Dwight Brooks;

One brother Bryant Sanders and one sister Miss Ida Sanders.

 

James Bennett Teal, the 5 month old son of Mr & Mrs Horace Teal, died Wednesday in a local

hospital. Services were held on Saturday from the Center Ridge Methodist church with

interment followed in the church cemetery.  Besides his parents, he is survived by one

brother, Monroe, 2 sisters Jewel & Nanette Teal; paternal gr parents Mr & Mrs M M

Teal, and the paternal gr parents Mr & Mrs Mant Stewart.

The DeFuniak Herald – January 7, 1960 Obituaries

Mrs Johnnie McLean Quarterman, age 85, passed away Dec 3 in Gadsden Co. hospital.

She was a native of Freeport and former resident of DeFuniak.  Services were held Monday

at the Page Clary Funeral Home chapel, burial followed in Magnolia.   She is survived by

one brother,  Judge D Stuart Gillis and one niece Mrs Richmond Smith.

 

Patricia Gail Vann, infant daughter of Mr & Mrs Leroy Vann died Saturday at home.

Services were held at Gaskin, Interment was at United Pentecostal Church cemetery.

Survived by her parents, 3 brothers, Hoyt Lee, James Larry & Jimmie Hilton Vann,

paternal grandfather Mr James Tillis Vann, and maternal grandparents Mr & Mrs Bennye

Poston of Gaskin.

 

Mrs Jean Landrum Crawford, a former resident, died in Dallas, Tx Saturday Jan 2 1960.

Services were held in St Matthews Catherdal and interment in Dallas cemetery, Sunday,

January 3 1960.

 

Thomas Richard McCullagh Sr 76, died early Wednesday in Panama City at the resident of his

nephew L G ‘Buddy’ Wilkinson.  He was a native of Ala and had been a resident here for

the past 4 years.  Services were held Thursday at Page Clary Chapel. He is survived by

one son, Thomas R Mcullagh Jr; one sister Mrs L G Wilkinson and 2 grandaughters.

The DeFuniak Herald – August 17, 1950 Obituary

Mrs Susana Bishop, aged 71, died in a Pensacola hospital, Friday Aug 11, following an illness of about 5 days. Mrs Bishop was a former resident of DeFuniak, having lived here a number of years, and later moving to Crestview. Services were held Sunday Aug 13, the interment being held at the Sandy Creek cemetery. Survivors are 3 sons, Curtis, Caro, Morris; and daughter Mrs Stell Glover, as well a number of grand-children.

The DeFuniak Herald – May 19, 1949 Obituaries

Mrs Nancy Padgett, aged 76, died at her home in Ponce de Leon early Saturday morning, May 14.  She was a native of Holmes Co and had resided in Ponce de Leon the past 32 yrs. Services were held at the Sandy Creek church on Sunday May 15. Survivors 1 son, John B Padgett, 4 daus Mrs G W Gist, Mrs N A McDonald, Mrs H J Hamm, Mrs I P Blanton, 2 sisters Mrs J T Ward & Mrs O E Matthews, 6 gr children, and 1 gr grand. Mrs Dillie Ann Graham aged 89, died Sunday night [May 8, 1949] after a long illness at home of her daughter, Mrs Lula Campbell. Services held Tuesday May 10 at Oak Grove Church with interment in Oak Grove cemetery.  Survivors son Mr W J Graham, daus Lula Campbell & Helen Graham, Mrs Ida Cochran & Mrs John Bryant, 18 gr children & 10 gr grands.

The remains of Pfc Edward H Catrett, son of Mrs Julia M Catrett will be returned from foreign Land for final interment. The date of funeral services will be announced later.

The Defuniak Herald – September 21, 1949 Obituaries

The coroner’s jury finds Louie M Reddock met his death from an automobile that was driven by an unknown

person.

 

Clyde Lamar Hidle, 19, son of Mr & Mrs C I Hidle of Euchee Valley community was killed

Saturday afternoon when he was accidentally shot by a .22 caliber rifle he was taking from

the car.  The accident happened in from of his parents’ home, the gun being discharged

in some way as he removed it from the car.  He was rushed to Lakeside Hospital but died

abt two hours later, about 8:00.  Services were held at Red Bay, Sunday, interment following

in Red Bay Cemetery. Survivors including his parents; a brother John and one sister, Mrs

John Rushing.

The Defuniak Herald – April 7, 1949 Obituaries

John Stevens, 52, died in the Veterans’ hospital, Atlanta Ga on March 30 after a long illness. Mr Stevens was a native of Geneva Co Ala and had made his home in DeFuniak Spgs for the past 32 years.  Services were held Friday. Mr Stevens was a veteran of W W I.  Surviving are his wife, Mrs Lois Stevens, son, Hilton Stevens, sister Mrs G R Paul; 2 gr dau, several nephews and nieces.

The body of Louie M Reddock, 36 of Gaskin was found on the highway about a mile south of that place about 11:30 Saturday night.  He had evidently been struck by truck or car, while lying on the highway, his head being crushed.  The body was found by Melvin Wilkerson of Gaskin.  Reddock’s dog was lying on the body when it was found.   Mr Reddock had no family was living with a brother in law, Burl Beck at Gaskin.  He told another brother in law, Huron Prescott that he was sick and was going to lie down by the side of the road for a while. Services were held from Corner Creek Church with interment in that cemetery. Surviving are his father & mother, Mr & Mrs J W Reddock of Gaskin; 3 sisters, Mrs Huron Prescott, Mrs Hollis Simpler and Mrs Burl Beck.

The Defuniak Herald – December 4, 1947 Obituaries & Birth notices

A former DeFuniak woman, the former Ethel Clark of this county, her husband and 3 month old son died at their home in Pensacola Wednesday of last week as a result of gas fumes emanating from the basement. Funeral services for Mr and Mrs Otis Dan Baggett and their son, Harry Otis, were held at Euchee Valley church with interment in Euchee Valley Cemetery. Mr Baggett is survived by brother Claude C, 3 sisters, Mrs Pearl White, Mrs Nell Ree White and Mrs Nanny Clark. Mrs Baggett 21 is survived by Her parents Mr and Mrs H L Clark, 6 sisters, Ms Virginia Howell, Mrs Stella Bishop, Mrs Julia Hussey and Misses Bobbie, Joan and Alice Clark, 3 brothers Heuer, James and William Clark. The couple had been married abt a year and half, and were so happy when son was born in July.

Mrs Mary Spears Bishop, 87 died last Wednesday at the home of a niece, Mrs Perry Lee Spears, near Darlington. Services were held Thursday at Leonia cemetery where interment followed. Survivors include one son, B O Bishop, sister Mrs Sarah Ann Clark and 2 nephews J D Clark and Perry Lee Spears.

Mr and Mrs Have Barton, boy, Nov 29, 9-1/4 lbs

John C McSween 86, died at home Friday morning. Services were held Saturday, interment at Magnolia. Survivors include widow, Mrs Grace McSween, 2 sons Dr J C and Marry McSween; 3 daughters Mrs F B Calloway, Mrs Kate Smith and Mrs T G Nesbitt.

The Defuniak Herald – December 19, 1946 Obituaries

T Hope Cawthon passed away on Friday Dec 13 aged 71 yrs, having lived his lifetime

in Walton Co.  He was born at the Cawthon home place hear Florala, the son of the

late Mr & Mrs Murray Cawthon.  He was commercial photographer .  Mr Cawthon was

first married to Miss Lena Henry d/o Dr G P Henry, to them was born a daughter,

Mrs Mary Hope Cawthon Howe.  Several years after her death, he married Miss Hattie

Matlock of Nashville, Tenn and to them was born a son, Matlock Cawthon who died

in early manhood on Sept 13 1935.  Funeral held Sunday with interment at Magnolia

cemetery in the family plot.  Survivors include wife, Mrs Hattie Matlock Cawthon, a

daughter, Mrs Robert Brice & 2 gr children, a sister Mrs R L Turner, 3 brothers, Dr I F,

Burris & Walter Cawthon.

 

Mrs Rachel E Cosson, 72,wife of J W Cosson died Tuesday at their home in Alaqua.

She is survived by the husband, 4 sons, Coy, Theopolis, Jeremiah, and Preston Cosson,

3 daughters Mrs Eve Infinger, Mrs Christine Culhane and Mrs Agnes McDonald, & one

brother J T Henderson. Services will be held on Thursday Dec 19 at Pleasant Ridge church

and interment will follow in the churchyard cemetery.

 

Mrs Mary Courtney passed away Tuesday Dec 10 at the home of her daughter, Mrs A C

Hulan in the New Harmoney community. She was a lifelong resident and would have

been 70 yrs on Jan 4.   Survivors include 7 children, Mrs I S Gomillion, Mrs C A

Straughn, Mrs A C Hulan, James C Courtney, J D O Courtney, Mrs James Cutts, and

Earl Courtney; 30 grchildren and 11 gr grandchildren.
