Obituary

December 12, 1946

On November 30, 1946 in the Frazier Ellis Hospital in Dothan, W. R. K. Senterfitt, 71, passed away. He was born in Pine Log, now Okaloosa Co., his parents moving from there to below Holt, Fl. where he grew to manhood.  Forty years ago he married Martha Holt of Holt. To this union was born three children, Mrs. Vida Cooper, Mrs. Elsie Richards Lunsford, and Mrs. Alma McQueen. He leaves 13 grandchildren, 8 great-grand-children, two brothers; Richmond and  J. H. Senterfitt, and two sisters, Mrs. Annie McGraw and Mrs. Mary Livingston,

Two of his sons in law preceded him in death and the third, Tom Cooper, followed him three days.  His remains were laid to rest in Piney Grove Cemetery on Sunday, December 1, 1946.

The Defuniak Herald – December 5, 1946 Obituary

Ella Louise Ward, 9 yr daughter of Mr & Mrs Ervin D Ward died at her home in

San Antonio, Tx on Tuesday, Nov 26. Funeral services were held from the home of

Mr Jeff Ward in Freeport on Friday.  Interment followed in Hatcher Cemetery.   The

deceased is survived by her parents, and a brother Ervin Jr all of San Antonio, Tx.

The Defuniak Herald – November 7, 1946 Obituaries

Mrs Felicia Farley Read 64 of Chatham, N J was killed on Tuesday when her

car turned over near Mossy Head after hitting a pig, with Mrs Read being thrown

from the car. She was brought to Lakeside Clinic where she died shortly after.

The driver of her car was not injured.  She had a winter home in Ft Lauderdale

and was on her way there from New Orleans.

 

Mrs Frances M Gainey died Saturday Oct 30 at her home.  The deceased was 66 yrs

and was born in Geneva county Ala having lived here for the past 5 years.  Services

were held on Oct 31 at Magnolia cemetery.  She is survived by her husband, Thomas

F Gainey, 2 sons Gorrie B & Lester Gainey, 3 daughters, Mrs Stella Williams, Mrs

Mattie Gainey and Mrs Ila Key.

 

Mrs Susan Odaline Andrews 78 yrs, a resident of Walton for the past 30 yrs, died at her

home Nov 2, with serverices held Sunday at Sandy Creek church, interment was at the

Sandy Creek cemetery.

The Defuniak Herald – October 31, 1946 Obituaries

Mrs Minnie Estelle Hall passed away on Oct 24 and was laid to rest on Friday.

Services were held at Cluster Springs.  Survivors include the husband Jim Hall;

2 sons, Burl & Floyd, on daughter Mrs Alan Godwin, 6 brothers, Bob, Connie, Oscar,

Alan, Horace & Hayes Jones, one sister Mrs Ed Johnston.

 

Lawrence King died at his home in Portland, Fla Thursday Oct 24.  He was 40 yrs of

age and born in Portland.  Services were held at the Methodist Church in Portland on

Saturday, with interment following in Hatcher cemetery.  Surviving are his wife,

Christine Davis King, 3 daughters Mrs Louise Barre, Hattie & Sylvia King,; 4 brothers

Bennie, James , Griffin, & Will King, 2 sisters, Mrs Malinda Crawford and Mrs

W H Jernigan.

 

John N Kennington 67, died Sunday in the Pensacola hospital.  He is survived by his

Wife, Mrs Margaret J Kennington, one son, J B Kennington, 2 daughters Mrs Glenn

Wilder and Mrs Russell Freeman; 2 grandsons Lynn & Kenny Wilder.  Services

were conducted from the Ponce de Leon Baptist church with interment following

in the church cemetery.

 

Mrs Catherine Simmons passed away on Oct 16 and was laid to rest in Mt Zion

Cemetery. She leaves a large circle of friends to grieve her.

 

Sam Simmons Jr, 2 1/2 year old son of Mrs Annie Lou Simmons, passed away on

Oct 26 at Lakeside Clinic and was laid to rest in Mt Zion cemetery on Sunday.

The Defuniak Herald – October 24, 1946 Obituary

1946 Oct 24

 

Sgt Charles Moler, Jr was killed in a motor accident on Oct 13 at Fort Bragg, NC.

‘C L’ as he was know having lived here from 1936 to 1941.  He attended Walton High

School.  C L saw action as a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne Division on the Leyte,

Negros & Pansy Islands of the Southern Philippines during the late war.  He was the

Holder of the Asiatic Pacific theatre ribbon, Philippines Liberation ribbon, with two

Bronze stars, the American Defense ribbon, Good Conduct metal, Infantryman’s

Badge and the Purple Heart.  He returned to the US in the regular Army and reenlisted

abt the time of the accident.  Funeral services for Sgt Moler were held at the Berra

Baptist Church in Jacksonville on Friday Oct 18 1946. He was buried in the U S

National cemetery at St Augustine, Florida.

The Defuniak Herald – September 19, 1946 Obituary

Arta Arlevia Cosson, 80 years, passed away Friday, September 13, at the home of her daughter in law Mrs Ruth Cosson with whom she made her home for many years. She was a native of Alabama, but resided in this place since a small child. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Lewis J. Cosson. Services were held at the First Baptist church on Saturday with interment following in Pleasant Ridge cemetery. Survivors include 2 sons, Harrison and Lewis Cosson, and 8 grandchildren.

The DeFuniak Herald – August 1, 1946 – Obituary

1946 Aug 1:   Josiah Howell 65, passed away at his home in Pensacola, Friday July 28. Services

were held at Pleasant Ridge church Sunday.  He was a native of Walton, but lived at

Pensacola for 2 yrs, being employed as bridge tender by the State Road Dept.  Interment

was made in the church cemetery.

The DeFuniak Herald – July 11, 1946 – Obituary

1946 Jul 11:   Mrs Fannie Wise Gatlin passed away Sunday at Pensacola Hospital. Services were

held Tuesday at Magnolia Cemetery.  Mrs Gatlin visited here on many occasions with

her sister Mrs R E Gatlin and the Obie Gatlin family. She was native of Elba, Ala and

the gr daughter of the late H B Prescott. Survivors included the husband, W I Gatlin,

and a daughter, 3 sisters, 4 brothers, an uncle J C Prescott, an aunt, Mrs Dora Wise.

The DeFuniak Herald – April 1946 – Obituaries

Fitzhugh Lee Gomillion, 59, passed away at his home in Ponce de Leon Apr 8. He was a lifetime resident of Walton Co. Services were held at Euchee Valley Church on April 9, interment was made in the church’s cemetery.  Survivors include a wife, the former Miss Cardell Rushing, 3 sons, Ralph, Jeraldan & Howard Lee Gomillion, 2 daughters, Mrs Maudine Finger & Mrs Jenette Byrd, 2 sisters, Mrs Ola Hurley & Mrs Nora Peacock.

April 18, 1946

Richard Emory Still, 6mos son of Mr & Mrs Morris Still (Ethel Pate) died at Pensacola hospital, Monday , April 9.  Services were held at the Freeport Baptist Tuesday with interment made at Hatcher cemetery. Survivors include the parents, and a grandmother, Mrs W E Still of Miss.

Mrs Josephine Wachob died at her home Monday April 15, age 68 yrs and native of Florida. Services held at the Otter Creek Church on Tuesday and interment at the church cemetery. Survivors include 3 brothers Joe, Marion & Jim Ammons, 3 sisters, Mrs J L King,  Mrs Anna Helms & Mrs Emma Shirley.

Elton D Peacock passed away at Bay Pines Veterans Hospital on Wednesday Apr 10. Services were held at Bay Pines on Friday. He was veteran of WWI, having served in 167th Infantry, Co. E of the Rainbow Division and was gassed at the battle of Chateau-Thierry.  Survivors include a widow, Bernice Walden Peacock, his father, Simeon P Peacock, sister Mrs Vassie Russo, 4 brothers, Colin, Simon, Clifford & Pat Peacock.

The DeFuniak Herald – March 1946 – Obituaries

1946 Mar 7:  Willis Coady Redmon, 31 yrs a native of Ponce de Leon was killed in auto accident

on Feb 28.Funeral services were held in family home Saturday. Survivors are his mother,  Mrs

Jimmy Redmon and 2 sisters, Lola Redmon & Mrs Lester Hall. Interment made in

Ponce de Leon cemetery on Mar 2.

 

Curtice A Hodges 74, died March 5 at his Vernon home and was interred in the

Damascus cemetery. Surviving are his widow, 5 sons, and 5 daughters. One son, H C

making his home in Defuniak, 32 gr children & 5 gr grands. Eight grandsons acted

as pallbearers for the funeral service which was held on March 6.

 

 

1946 Mar 14:  Mrs Maude Cole Manning, wife of Wendell W Manning died Tuesday in Ponce

de Leon. Funeral services at the Ponce de Leon cemetery Thursday Mar 11 with in-

terment following.  Survivors include the husband, one daughter, Elizabeth Ann, 4

step-children, Wendell Manning Jr USMC, Mrs Lance Jones, Gay P & James W

Manning; 4 sisters Mrs M Austin, Mrs Verlie Harper, Mrs M Deverts, Mrs T V

Powell, 3 brothers Spencer, Paul & Travor Cole.

 

Thomas Jefferson Adkinson 82, died at his home near Glendale, Saturday.  Born in

Coffee Co, Al he lived in Walton Co for the past 40 years.  The funeral was held from

Gum Creek church with interment following in Gum Creek cemetery.   He is survived

by 2 sons, David H & Oscar S Adkinson, 3 daughters, Mrs Eva Owens, Mrs Lela Jones,

& Mrs Callie A Dobbs, one brother Bully Adkinson and one sister Mrs Leona Nobles.

 

Mrs Harry McGee, who made her home at the Walton Hotel died a Thomasville, Ga

Hospital February 10, where she had gone for treatment.  The remains were cremated

in Macon, Ga and brought here for a memorial service at St Agatha’s Episcopal Church

on Sunday Mar 3.  The ashes were then shipped to Richmond, Va to the home of Mrs

McGee’s daughter, who with her father survive.

 

Joseph Johnson Cotton 42 yrs, died Saturday March 2 in his home. A native of Geneva,

Ala, he had lived here about one year. Services were held at Magnolia Chapel, with inter-

ment  in Magnolia. Survivors are wife and several children.

 

John McLeod 80 yrs. Died at his home near Eucheeana, Wednesday, February 27. He

was a native of Walton and lived in this community for 60 yrs. Services were held at

Valley Church, interment followed in church cemetery.  Survivors are 4 dau, Mrs D

Brannon, Mrs Abbie Tew, Anna & Mary McLeod; 3 sons, Alex, John Angus &

Raymond McLeod, one brother Lee, 2 sisters Mrs Sarah McCollum and Mrs Kate

Johnson.

 

1946 Mar 21:  Wilbur B Cawthon, veteran of both WWI & WWII, died at Legion, Texas

Veteran’s Hospital Wednesday Mar 13. He served the past 30 yrs in the Army en-

listing when 17 yrs of age. The body was brought here for burial at Pleasant

Ridge Cemetery on Sunday, with full military honors.

 

Susan Frances Simmons died Saturday March 18, at her home near Bruce at age

of 79 yrs.  Services were held at Black Creek Church Sunday with interment in

Black Creek cemetery.

 

Mrs Nancy A Nolin, 88, passed away at her home in Darlington Friday, March 22.

Mrs Nolin was a native of Pike Co, Ala but resided in Walton for many years.  She

is survived by several sons & daughters, her survivors include approximately 91,

including children, grchildren & gr grands.  Eight of her grandsons were pallbearers,

included Mayo Nolin, Earl Day, Warsaw Danley, Mike Berry, Tom Weeks, John Singleton,

Buddie Allen & George Nolin.
