The DeFuniak Herald – May 1944 – Obituaries and Announcements

May 18, 1944

Mrs M S Pender died Thursday night [May 11, 1944] at the home of her daughter Mrs Charles King. A brief service was held Saturday [May 13, 1944] following which the body was taken to Greenwood the home of the deceased for burial.  Mrs Pender who was 80 was a native of Georgia. Survivors are 5 daughters, Mrs Charles King, Mrs Harry McCaskill, Mrs L E Johnson, Mrs I D Burkett and Mrs L H Vivian.

Missing in Action Announcement, Prisoner of War, World War II Era:

Mrs Susan Beckham received a message from war department Tuesday [May 16, 1944] to the effect that her son, Major Walter Carl Beckham who had been listed as missing in action since February 22 of this year was a prisoner of war in Germany.  [Several long articles and pictures]

May 25, 1944 

M T W Cawthon,  known as ”Uncle Buddie” died Monday night [May 22, 1944] at his home. Services were held Wednesday morning [May 24, 1944] with interment in Magnolia cemetery.  He is survived by widow, 3 sons, 3 daughters, 6 brothers and 2 sister.  Sons are Randall, Leslie & Lloyd, daughters are Mrs Pauline Annis, Mrs Ruby McCarthy & Mrs Gypsy Newberry; brothers are W L, Burruss, Frank, T Hope, Harley & Walter, Sister, Mrs Mary Lou Turner, another brother S A died several years ago. The DeFuniak Herald – April 8, 1944 – Obituary

Howard Watkins, lost in action in the South Pacific on March 14. Mrs Watkins, formerly Edith Simmons of DeFuniak, lives at Hollywood and her sister, Mrs Ernest Graham of Hialeah accompanied her sister to DeFuniak where Mrs Watkins will make her home with her sister, Mrs Warner Thompson.

The DeFuniak Herald – March 1944 – Obituaries

Mar 8, 1944 A D Cosson died at his home on Thursday. Services were held at Baptist church on

Saturday, interment followed at Magnolia.  He is survived by his widow, 2 sons, Cpl.

A D Cosson Jr,  and Vernon Cosson, 2 brothers, one in Navy at Pensacola, and one

living in Akron, Oh.

 

1944 Mar 16 Lonnie Sharpe, long time resident of DeFuniak, whose death occurred at his home

in the East End were held at Methodist church on Wednesday, interment followed at

Magnolia Cemetery. Survivors are his widow and son William now with Armed Forces.

 

 

1944 Mar 30 Alvin Gillis, former DeFuniak resident died suddenly at his home in Orlando,

Monday.  Mr Gillis son of Mrs Norman Gillis and brother to Miss Kate Gillis. Two

brothers live in Ohio, Willie C and Angus M. Gillis. Survivors are widow, 2 sons who

are in armed forces – Alvin Jr and Harold. Services were held in Orlando as was interment.

The DeFuniak Herald – February 1944 – Obituaries + wedding announcement

1944 Feb 24  Lt Ewart T Sconiers dies in German Prison Camp. Born near Alaqua some 26 yrs ago to

Mr Warren & Maude Sconiers.   (no arrangements announced – Long article & picture)

 

1944 Feb 27 Mrs Mildred Plew Meigs 53, author of many children’s poems died Tuesday at her

Valpariso home. Services were held Wednesday at the home.  Mrs Meigs was the daughter

of the late James E Plew, she was born in Chicago and moved to Valpariso in 1923.  Sur-

vivors include her husband, Clifford; her mother Mrs James Plew and sister Mrs C W Ruckel.

 

WEDDING ANNOUNCEMENT:  Mrs Mary Douglass of Freeport announces the marriage of her brother J L Rice  80 yrs to

Mrs Christian Davis 70 yrs.

The DeFuniak Herald – September 1943 – Obituaries

1943 September 30 – Lt Louis Hightower, son of Mr & Mrs ‘Cot’ Hightower, former residents of Free-

port has been reported killed in action on the European battlefront.  Mrs Hightower (Nettie

Owens) was visiting relatives at Vernon when the message came telling of her son’s death.

The two Hightower brothers and a sister, Miss Marilyn have spent many years in Hollywood and

were well know in ”movie” circles.  Lt Hightower played with Jeanette McDonald in the film

“Firefly and Eleanor Powell in “Rosaline”.  He was the model for Prince Charming in the picture

Snow White. His sister Marilyn  is now with the Ziegfield Follies in New York.

 

Harold Judson McCaskill only son of Mr & Mrs R E L McCaskill died Thursday, September ??

at Marianna Army Air Field hospital of injuries received in an automobile accident which

occurred Wednesday near Grangerburg Ala.  Mr McCaskill 47 yrs was born at Freeport, Fla

and was a grandson of the late J J McCaskill, he married Sue D McConnell, and was a veteran

of WWI.  Survivors are his widow and 2 daughters Susanne & Angeline; his parents and 3

sisters Mrs Arthur Paulson, Mrs Charles H Levey and Miss Evelyn McCaskill;  Services were

were Saturday and interment was at Magnolia.

 

Lela Adklison a 17 year old girl was killed by a special train carrying troops Saturday night

At Defuniak.  She is survived by her mother and step-father.

The DeFuniak Herald – August 1943 – Obituaries

August 19, 1943

Willard Bonita Slacy’s parents received a letter which conveys the assumption that he must be considered among those who lost their lives when the ship USS Juneau was sunk in battle of Guadalcanal on 13 Nov 1942. Letter was dated 29 July 1943 to Mr Henry Cleveland Slacy.

Letter received by Mr H M Davis from Navy Officials states that Grady T Davis was Missing and presumed dead.

The sudden death of Mr John Carter occurred on Tuesday at his home in New Harmony. Funeral arrangements were not complete at press time.

Death of Rev. W T Ellisor beloved Methodist pastor came Tuesday at his home. He was born Apr 20 1867 at Pine Level Ala and was married to Miss Lovie Stewart April 8 1898 at Andalusia.  Services will be held on Thursday (today).

Mrs Kate Davis Hightower passed away at Pensacola Hospital Sunday. Funeral services were held Monday at Methodist church, interment was at Steel church cemetery. Survivors include husband, Capt H Hightower, aunt Mrs Hardy Crawford and an uncle A L Spencer.

The DeFuniak Herald – July 1943 – Obituaries + Missing in action announcement

MISSING IN ACTION ANNOUNCEMENT: 1943 July 8 – Mr & Mrs John C McSween received distressing information that Lt Raymond (Dick)

McSween, bombardier was missing in action in India.

 

Death came to Mr Duncan Gillis on Saturday Jun 30th at his home. Mr Gillis was one of the

oldest citizens of the county being 91 yrs. His daughter Miss Estelle attended her father.

Services were held at the home on Sunday, interment was made at Magnolia cemetery where

his wife and two daughters who proceeded him in death are buried.

June 3, 1943

Mrs Jay Laird, mother of Kylee Laird received a letter from her son. He was a prisoner of war in Germany. The letter requested cigarettes & shaving equipment, and was headed STALAG VII Grepruft, March 27 1943.

From Opp AL Newspapers:
Mrs Horace Danley passed away in Birmingham hospital on Monday May 24th.  Mrs Danley is the former Annie Jane Woodham. Services were held Wednesday from The First Methodist church. The deceased was born in Opp on Nov 30 1899 and lived here her entire lifetime.  On Apr 20 1921 she was married to H. D. Danley and to this union were born 3 children: Marjorie, Peggy & Horace Dewey Jr.  Survived by husband & 3 children, parents, Mr & Mrs N A Woodham all of Opp, 2 brothers J C & Willie Woodham.  [See also The Breeze, June 3, 1943, p. 6, and https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/29823020/annie-jane-danley )

June 10, 1943

Mr Charles Howard Hood of Westville, passed away at his residence in Westville on June 3rd. He is survived by his parents, Mr & Mrs C D Hood, several brothers and other relatives. L. C Ward, young son of Charlie Ward of  Freeport, was fatally burned on Tuesday May 25th at his home.  He was brought to the Lakeside Clinic where he passed away on May 27th. Services were held in Freeport on May 28th. The DeFuniak Herald – May 1943 – Obituaries and Wedding Announcement

May 13, 1943

The death of Mrs Mary Campbell McKinnon occurred Friday May 7 at her home. She was the daughter of the late Judge Daniel L Campbell and sister of the late Judge A G Campbell and is survived by two sisters Mrs C B McKinnon and Miss Emma Campbell, brother W O Campbell. Mrs J N McLeod a former resident of Point Washington passed away at Vero Beach, Fla on May 7th. Services were held in the First Methodist church in Point Washington on Monday. Interment was at Pt Washington cemetery.

May 27, 1943

Wedding Announcement: Mrs Cornelia (Adkinson) Spence daughter of Mr & Mrs M M Adkinson was married to Hal George Crawford of Mobile, Al on Sunday May 23 in Pensacola, Fla.  Mr Crawford is son of the late Mr & Mrs Hardy Crawford of Freeport and is employed at the Alabama Dry Dock & Shipbuilding Co in Mobile, where they will live.
