*1925 July 16 Mr & Mrs Claud Lathinghouse’s 8 months old daughter Dorothy died last Saturday.

The little one had been ill for some time and her death was not altogether unexpected.

 

*1925 July 30 Mr Ralph Bland’s two children were drowned at Harbeson City.  The boy, 10 yrs could

swim some but went out to far and lost his balance. His mother went out after him and was

drowning with her 17 month old in her arms.  A man on the bank went to her aid and they

saved the mother & baby. In the meantime the eldest girl ran out to assist her mother and

drowned.  The bodies were taken to Mt Pleasant, near Quincy for interment.

The DeFuniak Herald – June 1925 – Obituaries

June 4, 1925

R W Thompson 60 yrs died last Tuesday [June 2, 1925] while at a visit to his old home in Water Valley, Ky. The body will be brought her for internment on Friday [June 5, 1925] train and will be taken to the Methodist church for services. He is survived by wife, one daughter, Mrs R L Ringo and 3 sons, Ollie M, O C, & Warner Thompson.

S J Parish 83 yrs and Uncle of Missus Jennie & Anna Parish died Thursday [May 28, 1925] at his home in Gaskin. Services were held Saturday at Sandy Creek. Mr Parish who was the last surviving member of his generation is survived by six sons, MA, J L, Luke, E S, R W, and Marcus Parish, two daughters Mrs Vida Johnson and Mrs Camelson, his wife having died in January of the present year.

June 11, 1925

Romulus Wayne Thompson was born in Dickson Co Tenn, on February 23 1855. He removed to Grave Co, Ky at age of 21 yrs, living there for more than 40 yrs. He was united in marriage on Nov 9 1879 to Miss Dora Pi____.  To this union was born 9 children, four of them dying at early age, and one son Herbert passing away at age 13. (lengthy article)

Russell J Hillard 29 yrs, brother of Mrs Ollie Thompson was killed in accident near Jackson, Tenn. He was hitching up a team of mules when they were frightened by a dog, bolted and trampled him, pulling the cultivator they were hitched to over his mangled body.  His death occurred the same day Mrs Ollie Thompson’s father in law’s death.

FYI – Lawrence Ward’s disappearance is less mysterious as time goes by.  Father of the missing man talked to a family friend in Havana, Fl who says he saw Ward the day he was reported missing. Says he passed him outside of Havana and offered to help but they had just fixed the punctured tire and were getting on their way.

The DeFuniak Herald – May 1925 – Obituaries

May 7, 1925

Thomas J Lindsey, employee of the Britton Lumber Co, who resided at Mossy Head was fatally injured Thursday evening [April 30] about 1:30 when a tree he was cutting fell in the top of another tree, bending it nearly to the ground, when suddenly the falling tree freed itself and the other tree righted with such force as to sling one of its limbs off, the flying limb striking Mr Lindsey in the head.  He was rushed to his home and medical aid was summoned. He passed away abt 10:45. Services were conducted at Hacoda, AL on Friday. He is survived by wife and 3 children.

Thomas Murphy died Wednesday last week. He was a native of Holmes Co, FL who would have been 50 yrs on Nov 15th.  Leaves a wife and 7 children, 2 married daughters and one son who were summoned home; 4 sisters and on brother. (long article)

May 14, 1925

Wilma McLean, 3 yr daughter of Mr & Mrs J O McLean passed away Apr 29th. She was buried at Hatcher cemetery Wednesday.

Mrs John Peacock (nee Georgia Pearly Cousins) passed away in Texas, Thursday May 7th. Mr & Mrs Peacock had been on a visit to that state from their home in Tulsa, OK. The body was carried to her sister, Mrs Powell at Birmingham, AL where burial took place the following Saturday.  She is survived by husband and two children; numerous sisters and brothers, among them Mrs J Moss Flournoy of Vernon, FL.

Mrs A C S Smyth wife of the late Rector of St Agatha’s died at her home in Winston Salem, NC on Monday May 4th.

May 28, 1925

W C Marler’s 2 ½ yr old  son drowned Wednesday as a result of falling from a boat into the waters of East Pass.

Herman Ellis Thompson, a student at Howard College at Birmingham, lost his life in the undertow near Florosa Inn in Okaloosa county on Wednesday last week. .

J B (Bullie) Alford of Alaqua died last Sunday [May 24, 1925]. Funeral services at Alaqua church Monday after which the body was laid to rest with Masonic honors.

The deserted car of Lawrence Ward, who left Opp, Ala to join a fishing party at Bishop’s lake has been found near Reedy Creek and the surrounding circumstances justify a strong suspicion of foul play. J R Ward, father of missing man with Sheriff Bell are doing their best to clear up the mystery. Lawrence Ward who is 31 yrs  is said to have about 50-75 dollars on his person when he left Opp.

The DeFuniak Herald – April 1925 – Obituaries

April 2, 1925

Judge Daniel Campbell was born near Knox Hill in Walton Co Fla on July 27 1844 and was the youngest son of Angus & Mary Catharine Campbell. He peacefully passed away on March 19th 1925 in 81st year of his age. At age 17 enlisted in Confederate Army. After the War, he went to Marianna, FL where he worked in store of Mrs Merritt and read law under Judge Bush. He was admitted to the bar about 1869 or 1870 when about 25 yrs of age. Soon he returned to Walton Co, where he married Miss Emma Bowers in Feb 1871 and became the father of 8 children, 2 sons Newton & Ralph preceded the father as did his wife who died on Dec 7 1914. Survivors are 3 sons, Judge A G Campbell, G Bowers Campbell and W O Campbell; 3 daughters, Mrs C I McKinnon, Mrs John McKinnon and Miss Emma Campbell all of DeFuniak Springs.  Services on Mar 20th with interment in Euchee Valley cemetery. (2 long articles)

Geneva Camps, Argyle, FL;  News was received here Friday of the death of Ernest Toole, of this place but was sent some time ago to the Government Hospital in Tennessee with the hope that he would be greatly benefited, but gradually became worse.  He was a fine young man and leaves a wife and one child. Another WW Veteran has gone.

April 9, 1925

Hurdis Green passed away at home of his brother W S Green at Agryle, Fl Saturday night. Mr Green was 46 yrs on the 19th of February last. He was born & raised in Walton Co. Services conducted at the Valley church on Sunday and interment was at churchyard cemetery. Survivors are 2 sisters Mrs M M Owens & Mrs W B Hammond; 3 brothers Walker, Angus and Malcolm Green.

Alexander Sessoms of Bonifay Fl died  Thursday last. He was 69 yrs of age and a native of Cumberland county NC, he moved to FL in 1808. Survivors are 4 sons; William A, Kelley P, E M, & David J Sessons; four brothers and one sister.  His wife and one son preceded him to the grave.

James Ealum the 11 yr old son of Mrs & Mrs Monroe Ealum, of Glendale, died yesterday at home of his aunt & uncle, Mr & Mrs J F Howell.

April 16, 1925

J Mallie Martin Jr. – the following dispatch clipped from the Pensacola Dispatch and sent from Johnson City, Tenn and dated Apr 8th.  J Mallie Martin Jr 18, son of Capt. and Mrs J Mallie Martin, died here Tuesday after being struck on the head with a baseball during a high school game. The body will reach Laurel Hill Thursday morning and burial will be made in Almarant cemetery, Thursday. Young Martin was a 3 letter athlete in his junior year. Five hundred students marched with the body to the train.

John Theodore McKinnon passed away at his home Monday, after suffering a stroke the previous week from which he never recovered.  Services were held Tuesday at Euchee Valley cemetery. Mr McKinnon was abt 57 yrs and was born and raised in Walton Co.  In his younger days he married Miss Maggie Gillis who, with one son, preceded him to the grave some 25 yrs ago. Survived by one brother Dr C B McKinnon of this city and a host of minor relatives.

Mrs Mary Neel, who made her home with her only daughter, Mrs T M Garrett, passed away on Monday.  Services were conducted Wednesday and burial took place in Sandy Creek cemetery. Mrs Neel was 83 yrs of age. Shortly after the Civil War she moved to Walton. Her husband, son and daughter preceded her to the grave.

Henry M Wadsworth passed away at home of son, Marvin at Florala, Ala.  He was former resident of this city, later moved to Ga and only recently making his home in Florala. Death came on Monday afternoon. Services were held Tuesday in Florala, the boy was then conveyed to Defuniak with interment in Magnolia.  He was 66 yrs of age and survived by 2 sons; Marvin and J W Wadsworth; one neice Mrs Ponder (nee Willie Mae) and was preceded to the grave by his wife who passed away some 12 yrs ago.

Mrs Mary Taylor and one grandchild were buried in Magnolia cemetery, Wednesday of last week. A few days later, another child of the family was buried and Tuesday morning another daughter died, Mrs C J Simmons, who is survived by a husband and 2 children. Services in Magnolia yesterday.

Two services were conducted at Gum Creek church last Sunday when the body of the infant child of Mr & Mrs Jacob Murphrey was buried, who suddenly passed away the Saturday previous. The many friends of the Murphrey family sympathize with them, this being the third and only child of the family.

In Memory of Laura Evelyn Weeks: born Sep 27 1920, died Oct 21 1924 at Green Cove Springs Fl.  Buried at Beulah Church.

The DeFuniak Herald – March 5, 1925

Russell Halford of Laurel Hill died Feb 21st. He was born Dec 28th 1872 and was an invalid from birth. His parents died several years ago and left two sisters and two brothers to care for him. His sisters have devoted their lives to caring for him.

The DeFuniak Herald – February 1925 – Obituaries

1925 Feb 5– John Campbell Douglass 80 yrs died at his home in Argyle Wednesday of last week. He was born on Nov 11 1845?  in Walton Co Florida.  He entered the Confederate Army when a very young man and service until end of the war.  On Nov 25 1880 he was married to Miss Jennie Gillis.  To them were born 3 children, Gillis, Mary G & Curry Douglass. Curry died when one year of age, the other two, Gillis Dougass and Mrs J S Gaston (Mary G) live in DeFuniak Springs. After 13 yrs of marriage Mrs Douglass died and Mr Douglass married the second time to Miss Mary McDonald on May 28 1901 who survived him. Mr Douglass died Wednesday Jan 28 1925, burial at Euchee Valley church. Survivors are brothers, Angus, H A, D E and William Douglass; sister Mrs Jas A McLean. Services were held Thursday at the Valley Church.

 

A C Bullard died in Stedman, N C. He was 75 yrs and married Miss Jennie Strickland, daughter of the late Hector Strickland and to the union was born 9 children, all of whom with his widow survive him. A F, H H, J W, and  Dr John B Bullard, Mrs A B Watson, Mrs D R Culbreth, Mrs L J Alderman, Mrs J C Bryand & Miss Retta Bullard. Interment at local cemetery at Stedman.

 

Twelve people were killed and three wounded: died as a result of blast at the Newport Plant in Pensacola. Explosion on Saturday resulted in instant death of 12 employers and serious injury of 8 others, 3 of whom have since died, bring the deaths to 15. Killed were, Walter H Watson; Warren Eldridge; Edward Eldridge; Robert H Whitcomb; Robert H Whitcomb; D M Baggett; R M Hammack; S E Faulk; R L Calhoun; Frank Moran; Charles Hunter; G Carter; J A Stockman.  The last 5 being Negroes, 3 others Charles M Hammack, Charles Allison & Peter Henderson have since died.

 

*1925 Feb 12– Mrs Sarah Reisinger 77 yrs died last Thursday at home of her son GA Reisinger of this city. Survivors are 5 sons, one sister & one brother, George Stanton of Bay Village, Ohio. Her daughter in law, Mrs B J Reisinger of Elyria Oh has been here and sent remains back Elyria on Friday where services were conducted last Monday with burial in Elmwood Cemetery, in the family mausoleum next to body of her husband who predeceased her two yrs ago.The Reisinger’s were winter visitors from 1907.

 

Mrs J Q Spencer passed away Feb 1st at home of her son, Rev. A E Spencer, with whom she lived. The body was conveyed on the 5th to the evening train and shipped to Georgia accompanied by her son, where interment was made in the family plot at Flemington Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Ga.  She was 85 yrs of age and for past 13 yrs made her home with only son.  Several foster children Mrs J M Harden, Mrs F M Marrow, W Spencer Way, and Rev. Edgar W Way also survive her.  (second obit) Mrs Susan Ann Spencer, who before her marriage to John Quarterman Spencer was Susan Ann Way and was born at Walthoursville, Ga. on Nov 11, 1839.  Her husband and only brother served in CSA thru the war.  Mr Spencer was a teacher in city schools at Savannah & Flemington Ga before his death in 1890.  She lived with her brother and reared his 4 children along with her son.  Another child died in infancy.

 

Mrs L R Lathinghouse died Wednesday Feb 18, about press time.(Breeze Obit)  She had a stroke on Feb 1, having celebrated her 70th  birthday a few days before. Services today with interment at Magnolia.  Mrs Lathinghouse had been twice married, both husbands preceded her in death.  She is survived by one brother, Eli Sutton and 5 sons, John, B.C, & George Davis, Claude & Ross Lathinghouse; a daughter Mrs Elle Meshaw.

 

*1925 Feb 19– Mrs Nannie Cawthon Bowers, passed away Feb 16 at home of her brother L H Cawthon. She was daughter of the late Col. & Mrs W J D Cawthon and was born in the old Cawthon homestead in this county on Apr 25 1861.  On Dec 16 1880 she mar John L Bowers at the home of her parents.  Her young husband died and was buried on Apr 25 1882, her 21st birthday. Services on Tuesday with interment in Magnolia.  Mrs Nannie Bowers was survived by 3 brothers L H, J B, A C; and 2 sisters Mrs J P Allred and Miss Missouri Cawthon.

 

‘Pistol Pete” J. E.Bowdoin, federal prohibition officer was shot and killed Monday north of Caryville on Wright’s Creek.  Bowdoin learned a party would be coming down the Choctawhatchee with a cargo of liquor, he stationed a party of officers along the route.The moonshiners, it is alleged opened fire and he returned it, killing Bernie Harris instantly and wounding Sumpter Harris. Harvey Walker was wounded and his death is expected daily. One shot from the boat kit Bowdoin between the eyes, killing him instantly. Bowdoin was origianlly from Bradentown, but resided in Tallahassee where he is survived by a wife.  Services were held Wednesday last week at Tallahassee.  At the deceased’s request he was buried in his KKK robe and the organization exhibited its esteem and sympathy with a large cross of pure white flowers. (2 weeks of articles) FYI – Sumpter Harris & Harvey Walker improving in health. Coroner’s Jury fail toplace the blame.

 

Bullie Prescott, 50 yrs and life-long resident of Walton, passed away at his home north of Glendale Sunday Feb 15th.  Services on Monday and interment in Lime Springs cemetery.  Survivors are parents, wife and eight children, two of whom are married; and four sisters and five brothers. Some ten days ago, Mr Prescott fell from a wagon load of hay but did think his injuries serious.  While plowing the day after his fall, he discovered a severe pain in his side, that he was injured internally.

 

Floyd Collins, the man buried in a cave in Kentucky was found Monday. His body was wedged under the rocks which dropped and entombed him 17 days before.  Rescuers partially freed Collins from his living tomb in Sand Cave.

 

*1925 Feb 26– Mrs C A Stanley passed away the home of her son, C A Stanley Jr at Millville on Saturday in the 84 year of life.  She leaves an aged husband and four living children. “Aunt Margaret” as she was known was buried in Magnolia cemetery Monday.

The DeFuniak Herald – January 1925 – Obituaries

1925 Jan 8– Mrs Foster Garrett , about 24 yrs of age, died at her home in Freeport, FL last Saturday of typhoid fever. Laid to rest Sunday in Piney Grove cemetery.  She leaves a husband and a child about 2 yrs of age.

 

Henry A Hughes, another of Florala’s native citizens died after an illness of about 14 months at age 51 yrs.  He was the third son of Mr J E Hughes and the second to precede their aged father to the grave.  Another son J Thomas Hughes died a little more than a year ago. Besides his devoted wife, who was, before her marriage, Miss Emma Carlisle he leaves 2 children, Miss Edna & Henry Jr.  Miss Edna is teaching at Pine Castle, FL and  Henry Jr is student at University of Alabama. Interment in Greenwood cemetery on Sunday. Survivors besides wife and 2 children, aged father, brothers Dan & W P Hughes; sisters Mrs Jeff George, Mrs S E Hart, Mrs J F Price and Mrs Tom Spradley.

 

Roy Allan, charged with the killing of Bobby Woodham the day before Christmas was arraigned last Thursday. Several witnesses sustained his plea of self-defense. Woodham was drunk and kept pushing Allan. When he wouldn’t go away, Allan showed him a gun.  Woodham continued to fight and Allan shot him.

 

*1925 Jan 15– Wm R Stafford drops dead on Wednesday of past week at home in Mossy Head. He was married to Miss Alice Meigs.  Survivors are his wife, sons, Johnnie, Charlie, and William; daughters Ethel & Mable Stafford; brother and sister Mrs Davis.  He was 58 yrs of age. Services Friday at Crowder cemetery.

 

Mrs Flowers of Bruce Creek, 70 yrs passed away Sunday (January 11, 1925) and body was placed to rest Monday at the Steel Church at Alaqua. Mrs Flowers was the mother of several children and besides a number of sisters, two of whom are much older than she, leaves a large number of minor relatives and friends to mourn.

 

Mrs George Brown of Freeport died Monday (January 12, 1925). Funeral at Hatcher cemetery on Tuesday.  She was 59 yrs and had been married 40 yrs. She leaves a husband, 4 sons, 1 daughter,(Mrs Knight) to mourn their loss.

 

*1925 January 29– Leroy Allan, charged with the murder of Bobby Woodham, a second degree charge was found not guilty by the jury which heard the case.

 

*1925 January 31– Sarah B Meyers, 5 yr daughter of Mr & Mrs E E Meyers died Wednesday of last week at hospital in Atlanta. Her body was brought here for interment and laid to rest New Years Day at the Baptist church. She was born November 28 1920 in Chipley and died December 31st 1925 at St Joseph’s hospital in Atlanta Ga.

The DeFuniak Herald – December 1921 – Obituary

1921 Dec 29– W T May died at his home last Tuesday. Funeral held at the Presbyterian Church this morning (Thursday).  He was a native of Georgia but had been citizen of DeFuniak for 30 yrs.

The DeFuniak Herald – October 1921 – Obituaries

1921 Oct 13– Hector Strickland died Saturday at High Point, NC, he was grandfather of A F and Retta Bullard.  Mr Strickland was 91 yrs. Burial was made at his old home place in High Point, NC, Monday October 10.

 

G H Dixon, charged with murder of S A Wilcox found not guilty. S A Wilcox was killed 17th Mar. in Milton. Dixon told the sheriff he had done the killing in self-defense.

 

Robert Stinson, resident of Goose Creek died while on visit in Brundidge, Al. Mr Stinson about 70 yrs, is survived by one brother Sam Stinson and a number of relatives.

The DeFuniak Herald – September 1921 – Misc. announcements

1921 Sep 1– J R Turner of Ealum 70 yrs and one week old, born & raised in Walton Co, died Saturday. The body was laid to rest in Cluster Springs cemetery Monday.  He leaves a wife, 6 girls and one boy to mourn his loss.

 

The 10 yr son of Mr & Mrs Jasper brown of Ealum, died at his home Saturday (August 26, 1921) and was buried at Cluster Springs Cemetery on Sunday.  Death came after short illness of meningitis.

 

 

1921 Sep 8– Daniel Hardee, 13 yr son of Thomas Hardee, lost his life while trying to help his playmate, Dallas Scott, who had become entangled in shaft of mill. Accident happened last Friday at Scott Mill. He was thrashed to pieces and died from all his injuries on Saturday.  Sadly the boy’s mother died only one month prior. The boy leaves a heart broken father and 3 sisters to mourn his death.  Funeral services were conducted last Sunday in the Methodist Church.

WEDDING: Adam Hardy, 66 yrs of age, married Miss Sallie Smith, 13 yrs of age, last Saturday; the brides’ parents having signed all papers making the marriage legal. They reside in the Valley neighborhood near Knox Hill.

 

UPDATE: Putnam Ponssell, alias Jim Wingo and J V Martin, alias Jack Morris, were placed on trial in Crestview Tuesday charged with murder of John Tuggle, 5 July.  Ponsell pleaded guilty and made a full confession in court.  He hit Tuggle with iron bar, Martin hit 2 more times.

 

1921 Sep 15– Ponsel & Martin to Hang Sep 23rd.

 

Coy Holmes tried for murder of Claude Martin which took place May 22.

 

The lynching of Ponsell & Martin on Tuesday night last week was narrowly averted. People from Santa Rosa & Washington counties had the matter all planned.

 

1921 Sep 22– Coy Holmes found guilty with recommendation of mercy of court which means a life sentence.
