The DeFuniak Herald – February 1918 – Obituaries

1918 Feb 14– Mrs D D McCaskill died Saturday in Pensacola at her home. The remains were brought

to Miami where burial to place.  While removing muffins from the gas oven, her apron caught

in one of the burners and soon enveloped her in flames. Mr McCaskill who was home, was

burnt pretty badly about the arms while trying to extinguish the flames. She was immediately

taken to hospital but her suffering ended several hours later when she succumbed.  Before

her marriage she was Miss Myrtle Willard and was a DeLand resident, later the family

moved to Miami.  She leaves a mother father, 2 sisters, and a brother and husband.

 

1918 Feb 21– William E Douglass died last Thursday in Pittsburgh.  Young man was attending King’s

School of Oratory and Expression. The body arrived here Sunday morning.  His father left

here to rush to his bedside having arrived some few hours before his death.  Mr Douglas was a

young man of 27 yrs, and for a number of years he was effected with defective speech and

his course of 17 months in Dr King’s school had done much toward curing him. He leaves a

father, mother and sister Mrs Chas Morris of Laura, Miss.  His uncle from Pensacola, Mr Rice,

attended as did an aunt of the same place.

 

Mrs J A McCall died last Friday night, February 15, 1918.  She was a lady of 66 years, moving here from Alabama some 20 yrs ago and a mother of 12 children, 3 of which have preceded her in death, one boy and two girls.  Survivors are Mrs Holmes, Mrs Danford; Mrs Marzoni; Mrs Green, Mrs Murray, Miss Gussie, Hugh, Sam & “Jeff” McCall.  Services were Saturday with interment in city cemetery.

 

Mrs Marguarite Shugart died at her home on Saturday (February 16, 1918) and was laid to rest in city cemetery on Sunday.    Mrs. Shugart came here f rom Nebraska some 20 yrs ago and since the death of her husband a few years past has lived a quiet life.  She leaves a daughter, Mrs Zimmerman of Kilsey, Canada, a son Will C Shugart of Portland, Oregon, a sister Mrs Lucind Harris of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The DeFuniak Herald – January 1918 – Obituaries

1918 Jan 10–  F J White 70, died at  home of son Guy White in Dothan, Ala on Sunday. Burial took place

Tuesday at Geneva,with Masonic honors.  His daughters Miss Bessie, & Mrs Cowbrough arrived

here Sunday from Bagdad on their way to Dothan.  (Aug 2 1917 Herald – Mr P M Cowbrough

and Miss Kate White of this city were married in Florala Al last Tuesday July 31, with Rev

C B Currie officiating.)(Second Obit) shows survivors are widow, children: Mrs W H Louselle,

of Leaksville, Miss; Mrs B R King of Hosford, FL; Miss Bessie of DeF Spgs;  V E White of Mobile,

Ala and Guy White of Dothan.  Burial was in Geneva in local cemetery.

 

 

1918 Jan 17– W O H Shepard died Monday and was buried Tuesday in the city cemetery .  He came to

DeFuniak some 20 yrs ago.  He leaves a wife, one son and a daughter, one of the children of

the family having died some 3 yrs ago; also a large number of grandchildren.

The DeFuniak Herald – December 27, 1917 – Obituary

1917 Dec 27– Mrs M M Brazile died last Sunday, December 23 . Before her marriage some 4 yrs ago to Mr Brazile, she was Florence McCullough.  Survivors include her husband, 3 little children, father and mother.

The DeFuniak Herald – October 1917 – Obituaries

October 1917 Obituaries

 

1917 Oct 25– The 12 year old son of Mr Joe Mullis, who lives in Soctt Mill neighborhood north of Argyle, committed suicide last Sunday, October 21, by hanging himself. It seems the boy had a small rifle and want to take it into the woods with him, which his father would not allow, it being the Sabbath.  Whether this was cause is unknown and probably will never be known.  The boy was found some hours later hanging from a tree near father’s horse lot. His neck was not broken but he died of strangulation.

 

Mrs S A Richardson died Tuesday, October 23.  She was born in Marion Co, SC, on September 10,1833, the daughter of David & Sarah Alston Palmer.  In early years she was married to A J Richardson, to which union was born 4 boys & 2 girls.  At the conclusion of the Civil War she was in early 30’s, she found resting on her shoulders for her husband’s health had been shattered during service to his country.  (Only survivor mentioned) daughter Miss Mollie who was a teacher at a girls’ school in Charleston, SC.  (Long article written by her pastor)

The DeFuniak Herald – September 13, 1917 – Obituary

1917 Sep 13– Mr C R King died at his home last Sunday (September 9). Mr King was born in Doberan, Germany nearly 75 yrs ago and has been a citizen of the US for past 42 yrs.  He was educated at the University of Munich and has been a teacher since.  The body was carried to Enterprise, Ala on Monday for burial. He leaves a wife, 3 daughters =  Mrs John L Barley Jr, Mrs M I Avant, and Miss Ola King to mourn his death.

August 1917 Obituaries

 

1917 Aug 2– Mr Robert McCallum of Eucheeanna died at his home last Monday (July 30).  He was a confederate

veteran and leaves many relatives and friends to morn.

 

Joe Turner, who has been ill for some time, died on Monday, July 30 at Raborn & Kinsey Sanitarium.

 

1917 Aug 9– Coy Strickland who came to DeFuniak about a year ago from Bainbridge, Ga  and had been employed at the Harbeson mill died yesterday (August 8  ) from injuries received in accident the day before.  The young man got one foot caught in conveyor last Tuesday and died of injuries the following day.

 

FYI – A D Davis & Bettie Davis applied to adopt Ethel Hutchin a minor child 9 yrs of age,

            On July 9 1917.

 

William Skipper of Red Bay was accidentally shot and killed by William Hollis, an

aged and infirm man who had taken the gun to kill a squirrel for Mrs Skipper, who was ill

and wanted one.   Mr Hollis fell, discharging the gun killing Skipper.

 

1917 Aug 23– Andrew J Bolton died Monday night (August 20) at his home near Deerland and was buried

yesterday at Dorcas.

June 1917 Obituaries

 

1917 June 7– Mr T J McKee, our efficient deputy sheriff died at his home in this city last Saturday night

and was buried at Valley cemetery Sunday with WOW honors.  He leaves a wife and several

children.

 

** Will Blackwell, who is now in the Walton jail, is charged with the murders of Mr & Mrs Bud Davis,

(See March 29) several weeks ago, states that he will write a history of his life as soon as he has

vindicated himself of this revolting charge.

 

1917 June 28–  Mrs Milbra King, mother of Dr John F King, Mr D H King and Mrs Love Moore, died

Sunday at her home this city.  “Grandma King” as she was called was born in Baker Co, Georgia

Jan 4th 1831 and had reached the old age of 86 yrs when she died.  She joined the Primitive

Baptist church in 1865.  She was the mother of 8 children, three of who survive her. Funeral

Was held Tuesday at Glendale cemetery.

 

The home of Mr Henry Yon is being doubly affected.  Death claimed little Willie, 6 yrs old Sunday

morning (June 24). The funeral was set for Monday morning, and as the parties gathered at the home for the

service they learned that Mrs Yon had given birth some 3 hrs earlier to a little boy & little girl, born

dead.  Thus there were 3 dead lambs.  The funeral services were deferred until noon and conducted

at the cemetery of the Presbyterian Church.

May 1917 Obituaries

 

1917 May 3– Master Guy Davis, son of Mrs Annie McKinnon Davis, suffered a sad accident. The

little boy was about 10 yrs of age and was play about the barn and found some dynamite cap and fuse

and lit the fuse and blew off the first 3 fingers and half of thumb of his left hand and bruised

his face.

 

1917 May 10– Mrs Robert Shine, formerly of this city but now living in Panama City died in Mont-

gomery, Ala Monday May 6 and was buried at Opp, Ala Tuesday May 7.  In addition to her

mother and one sister, she leaves a husband and two little girls.

 

May 1917–   Mrs C E Morgan of Huntington W Va who wintered here died yesterday at her home in W Va.

She left a host of friends here in DeFuniak Springs.

 

1917 May 17– Clarence Thompson was accidentally killed Sunday night, by being struck in the back

of the head by Jasper Brown while the two were engaged in cutting a bee tree.  In some manner

Thompson got his head in the way of the axe Mr Brown was using.  The axe penetrated the

skull.  Mr Thompson died four hours later leaving a wife and 3 small children.

 

1917 May 31– Austin Ames died last Monday. Dr & Mrs Ames left Monday night to attend the funeral

of their son.

 

May 1917–  Mrs Sarah T McDonald, mother of our postmaster died at her home near Euchee Valley last

Thursday and was laid to rest in Valley cemetery the following day.  She was born in Holmes

County May 10th 1833 and moved to Walton with her parents when a small child.  She was

married to Daniel P McDonald September 29th 1858.  All her children, 5 sons & 3 daughters

survive her.  For 64 yrs was a faithful member of the Presbyterian church. Services in Valley

church Friday.

The DeFuniak Herald – April 1917 – Obituaries

April 5, 1917

Mr C R Walden, ‘Grandpa Walden’ as he was known was accidentally killed near Enterprise, Ala yesterday evening.  He was in a buggy going to Enterprise to visit his daughter in law, Mrs J C Walden Sr, when the horse became frightened and ran away throwing Mr Walden from the buggy and fracturing his skull. . . . The late J C Walden Sr was his son.

Headline: “IT IS WAR”

April 19, 1917

Mr W A McCallum of this city, who was injured several months ago by the accidental overturning of a railroad motor car, died at the sanitarium yesterday. Funeral we be held at Euchee Valley church today.

Memorial:  Mrs Lizzie Edwards was joined in holy matrimony with Lawrence Edwards. She died of malaria and was ill for several months.  She was a Christian worker. (long poem)
