The DeFuniak Herald – March 26, 1925

Hon. Daniel Campbell passed away last Thursday at his home. Services on Friday and interment was made in Valley church cemetery. Daniel Campbell was 80 yrs and is survived by 3 daughters; Mrs (Dr) C B McKinnon, Mrs John L McKinnon, and Miss Emma Campbell; 3 sons Judge A G Campbell, G B & W O Campbell. Deceased was CSA veteran and for many years attorney for the L & N Railway.

The DeFuniak Herald – March 26, 1925

Eugene Hightower for 40 yrs a mail clerk on the Central of Georgia Railway, committed suicide on Friday, Mar 13th at Albany, Ga.  A Negro by the name of Potts was the only eye witness to the tragedy, who stated that Hightower made a dive under the driving wheels of the moving locomotive. Eugene was engaged to be married to Mrs Carrie Thomas of Florala, the wedding date set for March 19th.  Funeral services were held at his old home at Blakely, Ga.

The DeFuniak Herald – March 19, 1925

Thomas Walter Higginbotham faces charges of murder in death of Martin Tabertwho it was claimed came to his death as the result of a severe flogging administered by the former, was indicted at Cross City, Fl, Mar 14th for 1st degree murder in the death of Lewis Baker, a negro in October 1924. Higginbotham was convicted in Columbia Co on July 8th 1923 for the death of Tabert and sentenced to 20 yrs in state prison. The body of Baker was found near the Putnam Lumber Co and had been missing since Oct 19th, 1924. This is a separate case from that of Tabert.

The DeFuniak Herald – March 11, 1943

1943 March 25 – D. Harley McSwain Sr passed away Tuesday at Providence Infirmary in Mobile, Ala. A native of Walton he was commissary manager for the Jackson Lumber for 8 yrs. Services conducted from home of his sister Mr G D Newton, Florala, Ala, with interment at Magnolia. Survivors; wife Mrs Minnie Kennedy McSwain, son Corp. D H McSwain Jr, Keesler Field, parents Mr & Mrs W T McSwain, Florala; 2 sisters, Mrs C H McFall and Mrs Newton both of  Florala.

Kylee Laird – missing in action – says report. Mr & Mrs Jay Laird have been officially notified their son Kylee of the U S Army is ”missing in action”.  No other information available at press time.

The DeFuniak Herald – March 11, 1943

Ben H Crawford Jr aviation cadet U S Army stationed at Fort Sumter SC was killed when his plane crashed Wednesday Mar 10. The young man was 21 yrs and volunteered for service several months ago. The son of Mr & Mrs Ben H Crawford of Crichton, Ala and a nephew of Miss Sallie Mae Crawford of Defuniak. Miss Crawford and her brothers, Sergt Wallace Crawford of Eglin Field and Hayes Crawford of Freeport attended the services in Mobile, on Sunday.

The DeFuniak Herald – March 11, 1943

Norman McLeod, son of the late Captain William McLeod passed away Wednesday March 10th in St Petersburg Florida.  He is survived by 2 brothers John & Walter, 2 sisters Misses Kate and Sarah Ellen of St Petersburg. Services were held Saturday in Wickersham‘s Chapel, internment was at Magnolia.

The DeFuniak Herald – March 11, 1943

Mr Z D Adair passed away at his home Wednesday Mar 3rd. The deceased, 59 yrs, had been resident here for about 24 yrs, having been born and reared in Pike Co, Ala, coming to Ponce de Leon where he married Miss Lilly Moore in 1907.  Their children Mrs T D Beasley and Jack Adair, 2 gr children, brothers, Dr A D Adair Sr, J E Adair and sister Mrs S  Thompson.
