Mary Lou Cawthon (left) is shown sitting on the front porch of her father’s home with Mrs. Manning and in her father’s car (below) which was one of the first in DeFuniak Springs. The Cawthon home was on Nelson Avenue, next door to the current Thriftway Supermarket. Mary Lou was the youngest of ten children of Murray Allen Cawthon and his wife, Mary Jane Williams, and is thought to be the first child born in the town of DeFuniak. Her older brothers included William Lee Cawthon, founder of Cawthon State Bank; John Crenshaw Burruss Cawthon, owner of the Big Store; Walter Clayton Cawthon, who assisted his brother Burruss with the Big Store; and Thomas Hope Wesley Cawthon, a prominent photographer of the time.
In 1925, Mary Lou Cawthon became the second wife of Robert Lee Turner who served in educational positions throughout the state. They made their home in Clearwater.
