Laird was born in the Lexington District of South Carolina on June 3, 1821. He married Sarah Ann Long on September 5, 1848, in Alabama, and they had nine children. Sarah was born in Butler County, Alabama, on April 24, 1832.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Laird enlisted in\u00a0the Confederate Army&#8217;s Gulf Rangers at Geneva, Alabama, on September 14, 1861.\u00a0 This\u00a0unit subsequently became Company D, 1st Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi Infantry (also known as the 4th Confederate Infantry).\u00a0 He was elected Captain of the company.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was captured during the Battle at\u00a0Island Ten on April 8, 1862, and was taken to Camp Randall in Madison, Wisconsin, where he arrived on April 20, 1862. He was later imprisoned in Camp Douglas (Chicago) Illinois.\u00a0 After the unit was exchanged at Vicksburg, it was reorganized as\u00a0Company E, 54th Alabama Infantry, but Laird was\u00a0not reelected as Captain.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He enlisted in Captain Monroe&#8217;s Company on September 20, 1863, in\u00a0Coffee County, Alabama.\u00a0He was detailed for post duty in Montgomery in May 1864 because\u00a0he was unfit for field duty.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Henry died on October 10, 1904, in Glendale.&nbsp;Sarah died in DeFuniak Springs on March 8, 1918. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Henry Laird Burial: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Gum Creek Cemetery (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/39887776\/henry-laird\" target=\"_blank\">Gum Creek Cemetery<\/a>, Glendale<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sarah Ann Laird Burial: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/26179011\/sarah-ann-laird\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Gum Creek Cemetery (opens in a new tab)\">Gum Creek Cemetery<\/a>, Glendale<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Henry W.
