1925 Jan 8– Mrs Foster Garrett , about 24 yrs of age, died at her home in Freeport, FL last Saturday of typhoid fever. Laid to rest Sunday in Piney Grove cemetery.  She leaves a husband and a child about 2 yrs of age.

 

Henry A Hughes, another of Florala’s native citizens died after an illness of about 14 months at age 51 yrs.  He was the third son of Mr J E Hughes and the second to precede their aged father to the grave.  Another son J Thomas Hughes died a little more than a year ago. Besides his devoted wife, who was, before her marriage, Miss Emma Carlisle he leaves 2 children, Miss Edna & Henry Jr.  Miss Edna is teaching at Pine Castle, FL and  Henry Jr is student at University of Alabama. Interment in Greenwood cemetery on Sunday. Survivors besides wife and 2 children, aged father, brothers Dan & W P Hughes; sisters Mrs Jeff George, Mrs S E Hart, Mrs J F Price and Mrs Tom Spradley.

 

Roy Allan, charged with the killing of Bobby Woodham the day before Christmas was arraigned last Thursday. Several witnesses sustained his plea of self-defense. Woodham was drunk and kept pushing Allan. When he wouldn’t go away, Allan showed him a gun.  Woodham continued to fight and Allan shot him.

 

*1925 Jan 15– Wm R Stafford drops dead on Wednesday of past week at home in Mossy Head. He was married to Miss Alice Meigs.  Survivors are his wife, sons, Johnnie, Charlie, and William; daughters Ethel & Mable Stafford; brother and sister Mrs Davis.  He was 58 yrs of age. Services Friday at Crowder cemetery.

 

Mrs Flowers of Bruce Creek, 70 yrs passed away Sunday (January 11, 1925) and body was placed to rest Monday at the Steel Church at Alaqua. Mrs Flowers was the mother of several children and besides a number of sisters, two of whom are much older than she, leaves a large number of minor relatives and friends to mourn.

 

Mrs George Brown of Freeport died Monday (January 12, 1925). Funeral at Hatcher cemetery on Tuesday.  She was 59 yrs and had been married 40 yrs. She leaves a husband, 4 sons, 1 daughter,(Mrs Knight) to mourn their loss.

 

*1925 January 29– Leroy Allan, charged with the murder of Bobby Woodham, a second degree charge was found not guilty by the jury which heard the case.

 

*1925 January 31– Sarah B Meyers, 5 yr daughter of Mr & Mrs E E Meyers died Wednesday of last week at hospital in Atlanta. Her body was brought here for interment and laid to rest New Years Day at the Baptist church. She was born November 28 1920 in Chipley and died December 31st 1925 at St Joseph’s hospital in Atlanta Ga.
