Mrs T P Andrews 77 died Wednesday Mar 2, she was a native of Holmes Co and resided in DeFuniak for past 37 years.  Services were held Friday. Survived by one daughter Mrs Boggan Wright; 4 sons, Leo, Glenn, Hubert & Gay; one sister Mrs Dempse Merrell; 18 grandchildren & 7 gr grands.

Mack Goddin – Graveside services were held Friday Mar 4 in Mt Zion Cemetery near Ponce de Leon, for Mack Goddin who died on Wednesday at home of his daughter, Mrs Mallie Goddin. He was a native of Holmes Co.

Miss Gussie Hamilton died Wednesday [March 2, 1960] at local hospital. Services were held Saturday with interment in Magnolia.  She was a native and lifelong resident.

Mrs Sarah Dawkins Wesley (see Mar 3 1960) 64, widow of the late Rev Herman P Wesley died Sunday in a Flomaton hospital.  Services were held Monday, graveside services at Magnolia. Survivors are 2 sons James R & John F; sister Mrs W E Crown and 6 granchildren.

Daniel Pressley Lindsey 82, died Sunday Mar 6, in home of a son Morris Lindsey.  A native of Butler Co, Ala he has lived in Walton for past 60 yrs.  Services held Tuesday  with interment in Cluster Springs Cemetery. Survived by 2 sons, Morris & Rev Gosper Lindsey, 2 brothers, Rev E C & B O Lindsey; one sister Mrs Alice Alford.

Mrs Ada Anna Huggins 84, died Saturday Mar 5, services were held Monday with burial in Otter Creek cemetery.  Survived by on sister, Mrs Emma Andrews, 4 step-sons, ClarenceClaude, Curtis & Marcus Huggins; 2 step daughters, Mrs Monett Arrants & Mrs John Singletary.

Cpl Jerome Holley, s/o Mr & Mrs W A Holley, & Miss Maybell Carter, d/o Mrs Ada Carter; were married in Geneva, Ala on Saturday Feb 27.

The Defuniak Herald – December 4, 1947 Obituaries & Birth notices

A former DeFuniak woman, the former Ethel Clark of this county, her husband and 3 month old son died at their home in Pensacola Wednesday of last week as a result of gas fumes emanating from the basement. Funeral services for Mr and Mrs Otis Dan Baggett and their son, Harry Otis, were held at Euchee Valley church with interment in Euchee Valley Cemetery. Mr Baggett is survived by brother Claude C, 3 sisters, Mrs Pearl White, Mrs Nell Ree White and Mrs Nanny Clark. Mrs Baggett 21 is survived by Her parents Mr and Mrs H L Clark, 6 sisters, Ms Virginia Howell, Mrs Stella Bishop, Mrs Julia Hussey and Misses Bobbie, Joan and Alice Clark, 3 brothers Heuer, James and William Clark. The couple had been married abt a year and half, and were so happy when son was born in July.

Mrs Mary Spears Bishop, 87 died last Wednesday at the home of a niece, Mrs Perry Lee Spears, near Darlington. Services were held Thursday at Leonia cemetery where interment followed. Survivors include one son, B O Bishop, sister Mrs Sarah Ann Clark and 2 nephews J D Clark and Perry Lee Spears.

John C McSween 86, died at home Friday morning. Services were held Saturday, interment at Magnolia. Survivors include widow, Mrs Grace McSween, 2 sons Dr J C and Marry McSween; 3 daughters Mrs F B Calloway, Mrs Kate Smith and Mrs T G Nesbitt.

The DeFuniak Herald – November 1944 – Obituaries & births

1944 Nov 16:   Jesse Melvin Childers, the young son of Mr & Mrs J A Childers died at the family home

Tuesday night Nov 7 after a brief illness of diphtheria. Services were Wednesday after-

Noon at the home.  The little daughter of the family is also quite ill with same disease.


Mr  Maynard M Bannister died unexpected Monday morning at his home.   The Bannister

Family came here from Florala, Ala many years ago.  Services were held at family home, with

interment at Magnolia.  Surviving family include the widow and 2 daughters Mrs Lura

White and Miss Thelma  Bannister, son Ray M Bannister and 2 gr sons Maynard & Fred

White, and the little son of Mr & Mrs Ray Bannister; sisters Mrs E M Lee, and Mrs O L



Mrs Sherman Hutto was found dead last Monday with her head in a small spring of water,

near her home.  Mrs Hutto was a victim of epilepsy and it is presumed she had an attack

and fell into the spring.

1944 Nov 23:   P W Smith, died at his home on the Freeport road early Monday morning. Services were

held at the home Tuesday, interment in Magnolia Cemetery.   Percy W Smith was born in

Booneville, Mo on Mar 21 1869.  He spent his boyhood day in Lamar Mo, going from there

to Tyndall, S D from which place he moved to Walton Co arriving here on Thanksgiving day

in 1901.  Survivors include widow, 3 sons Lewis T, Hugh P & Kenneth R Smith; 2 daughters

Mrs Anna Hollingsworth and Mrs Maxwell Master; one sister, Mrs W P Finks of Mo.

The DeFuniak Herald – January 1944 – Obituaries + birth announcements; wedding

1944 Jan 13  Howell Jones, abt 70 yrs of age and former resident of Defuniak died at his Memphis

Tenn home Saturday.  While Mr Howell’s death was not expected, his health has been poor.

Survivors are his widow, Mrs Howell Jones, and 3 daughters Mrs V N Davis,  Mrs. A J

            Frazer and Mrs J E McCaskill.  Mr Jones’ father, the late A P Jones was a merchant in

this place.


Mrs Christian Stubbs passed away at her home at Rock Hill Sunday morning Jan 9th,

and was buried in Euchee Valley cemetery Tuesday afternoon.  She was a native of

Walton Co, survivors include 2 daughters, Mrs Blanche Smith & Mrs Mary Lou

Torrence, and several grandchildren.


John Duncan Anderson of Walton Co passed away at his home in Eucheanne Sunday

night, Jan 9th after an illness of 2 yrs.  Mr Anderson was 63 yrs and live an entire life-

time in this county.  Services conducted at the home Monday and interment was made

in the Valley Cemetery.  Survivors include widow and foster son Emory Campbell

who is in the Army stationed at Eglin Field.

Mrs J H Hinote died at her home Saturday, Jan 8th.  Before her marriage to Mr Hinote,

July 2nd 1896 she was Miss Ida Leona Meigs. Born in Walton Co nor far from Mossy Head,

She lived her entire life within 10 miles of birthplace.  She was the mother of 11 children,

5 boys & 6 girls. They all survive her but one daughter, Mrs Ruby Laird who passed away

8 yrs ago.  Survivors are Mrs Gladys Shelley, Mrs Maggie Chesser, Mr Loyd Hinote,  Sgt.

Curtis Hinote, Johnnie Claude, Newton Hinote, Mrs Mae Adams, Mrs Annie Richardson,

& Mrs Nora Boothe, 24 gr children, & 3 gr grands.  Interment was at Crowder Cemetery.


Mrs Ada Lindsey, wife of  A L Lindsey, died Tuesday morning at her home.  The deceased

was 57 yrs and a native of Walton Co.  Services were Wednesday and interment was made

at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery.

1944 Jan 20 Mrs Cynthia Padgett, age 82 passed away at her home in Gaskin, Friday Dec 14 from

heart attack.  The deceased had lived in that community since 1902, coming from

Covington Co, Ala.  She was married twice and is survived by 3 sons, Lloyd Mosely,

C Rex  Padgett,  and  R Q Padgett.   She was the mother of 7 sons, four of whom preceed-

ed her in death.  Services were held Saturday at Gaskin Baptist Church and interment

was made in church cemetery.


Mrs Dallas Miller age 22, was so badly injured from burns, sustained in a wreck, that

she died at Lakeside Clinic Monday.   In trying to avoid a hog in road, her truck over-

turned and caught fire, Mr W A Burkett went to her assistance.   She was severely

burned all over her body, blankets were wrapped around her and Mr Burkett and

Woodrow Holley brought her to the clinic in Mr Holley’s car.  Services were held

on Wednesday at the Cluster Springs church, burial in church cemetery.


Mrs Celia Gainey died at her home Monday morning Jan 18 at age of 82 yrs.

She had lived in Walton Co 75 yrs.  Services held on Wednesday , interment at

Magnolia Cemetery.

The DeFuniak Herald – February 1943 – Obituaries + birth announcement

1943 Feb 11 – Mrs Eliza Brown Caswell of Freeport, Fla passed away at the home of her daughter,

Mrs. Hubert Hightower at Panama City, on Thursday February 4th. Mrs Caswell 82 yrs,

Was brought here to the home of a son Mr Ira Brown and services were conducted

Friday at Steel Church cemetery and burial there.  The deceased is survived by 2

aaughters Mrs Hubert Hightower and Mrs Texie Thomason of Freeport, and 2 sons,

Ira Brown of DeFuniak, and H B Brown of Freeport. Two sisters Mrs Anna Crawford

and Mrs Sarah Sconiers; two brothers A L Spencer & John Spencer.


Mr E L Gomillion died at his home at Red Bay Tuesday, February 2. Services were con-

ducted Wednesday. Mr Gormillion was 90 yrs at time of his death.


Mr Allen W McCullough passed away at his home in North Walton Monday February 1.

Services were conducted Wednesday followed by burial in Gum Creek cemetery.  Mr.

McCullough, a native of Elba Ala was 77 yrs of age at time of his death.


Miss Effie Carmichael passed away at Point Washington, Florida, February 4th. Services

Were held at Point Washington cemetery February 5th.


Everitt Yates of King Drug Store received a message last Thursday anounncing the death of

His brother Kenneth Yates of  US Marine Corps in the Pacific war area.  Kenneth Yates 22 yrs.

Enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942 from Bonifay, Fla his home town. Letters from Kenneth

Have been received since the official notice, one written after the date officials say he died.

The family are hoping there was a mixup.


BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT:  Dr & Mrs E L Towsend were happy on Saturday on receipt of news they were grandparents.

BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT #2:   Mr & Mrs Henry Towsend announce the birth of Ralph Evans on Feb 6th at Arlington,
