William Rogers manufactured and distributed dressed lumber as early as 1893 under the name William Rogers and Company. His son, Henry Jewett Rogers (1875-1930) (left), graduated from the Florida State Normal School and began teaching in Portland at the age of 19.
While at a summer school course in Lake City, Henry met his future wife, Ruby Edwards Rose (1878-1964) (right). They became engaged in 1900 and married in 1903. Henry soon became the principal of Walton High School, a position he held until 1907 when he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. He was quite ill for the remainder of his life.
Ruby helped with bookkeeping at the Rogers mill and, after William Rogers died in 1915, Henry and Rose both worked at the mill. What remained of the business was sold in 1930, the year Henry died. Ruby taught Senior English at the high school for many years. She retired in 1949 and died in 1964. (Photographs courtesy of their granddaughter, Rose Rogers of Dune Allen.)
