1943 September 30 – Lt Louis Hightower, son of Mr & Mrs ‘Cot’ Hightower, former residents of Free-

port has been reported killed in action on the European battlefront.  Mrs Hightower (Nettie

Owens) was visiting relatives at Vernon when the message came telling of her son’s death.

The two Hightower brothers and a sister, Miss Marilyn have spent many years in Hollywood and

were well know in ”movie” circles.  Lt Hightower played with Jeanette McDonald in the film

“Firefly and Eleanor Powell in “Rosaline”.  He was the model for Prince Charming in the picture

Snow White. His sister Marilyn  is now with the Ziegfield Follies in New York.

 

Harold Judson McCaskill only son of Mr & Mrs R E L McCaskill died Thursday, September ??

at Marianna Army Air Field hospital of injuries received in an automobile accident which

occurred Wednesday near Grangerburg Ala.  Mr McCaskill 47 yrs was born at Freeport, Fla

and was a grandson of the late J J McCaskill, he married Sue D McConnell, and was a veteran

of WWI.  Survivors are his widow and 2 daughters Susanne & Angeline; his parents and 3

sisters Mrs Arthur Paulson, Mrs Charles H Levey and Miss Evelyn McCaskill;  Services were

were Saturday and interment was at Magnolia.

 

Lela Adklison a 17 year old girl was killed by a special train carrying troops Saturday night

At Defuniak.  She is survived by her mother and step-father.
